Xiaomi’s Mi 9 has been in the news since last few weeks in the form of leaks and rumors. But we finally have some official news regarding the device. Co-owner Lei Jun posted a picture on the Weibo (Chinese social networking site) which reveals the launch date of the device as February 20. This puts an end to speculations that the Mi series flagship would be launched towards mid-2019.

There is another poster on the Weibo in which Roy Wang from Chinese boy band TFBoys is seen holding the phone with triple camera set up on the back. Popular tipster Ice Universe has also revealed that Xiaomi has started sending out a media invites for the Mi 9 launch event. The phone will be launched at company’s hometown China for now. There is no word yet on the phone’s global launch. It will be interesting to see if Xiaomi will launch the Mi 9 in India as the predecessor Mi 8 never made it to Indian market.

Expected Specifications of Xioami Mi 9

There is no official information available yet regarding the Mi 9 specifications except for the fact that it will sport a triple rear camera set up. But the device has been subjected to several leaks and rumours in the recent past. Based on the leaks, the Mi 9 could be powered by Qualcomm’s latest flagship Snapdragon 855 processor alongside the X24 modem which supports 5G connectivity. It may sport a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 2280 pixel screen resolution and an aspect ratio of 19:9. The display will have the latest tear drop shaped notch at the top which will equip the selfie camera.  The phone will also feature an in-display fingerprint sensor, something which is catching up fast. It is expected to run Android 9 Pie operating system out of the box with MIUI 10 on top. Some reports also suggest that Xiaomi is working on the MIUI 11 and the Mi 9 could be shipped with the same. In terms of storage, the company is expected to the phone in three variants- 6GB RAM + 128GB internal storage, 8GB RAM + 128GB internal storage and 8GB RAM + 256GB internal storage.

As mentioned earlier, the phone is confirmed to come with a vertically stacked triple rear camera set up on the back which could comprise of a 48MP primary sensor + 12MP secondary sensor with PDAF support + the third TOF camera. The setup also includes an LED flash which is placed under the shooters. Further, the phone could come paired with dual LED flash. The selfie camera is expected to be 25MP.

The phone could pack a 3500mAh capacity battery with Type-C 1.0 reversible connector and 24W or 32W fast charging support. In terms of pricing, the Mi 9 is expected to come with a starting price tag of CNY 2,999 which roughly translates to Rs 30,500. The device could be made available for purchase sometime around March. The expected colour variants are Black, Blue, White, and Gold.

The rumours also suggest that the Mi 9 will have a physical button on the left side which is likely to be the trigger for the smart assistant Xiaoai, similar to the Samsung Bixby button.

In related news- Xiaomi has roped in Wang Yuan, member of the band TFBoys, a UNICEF ambassador and one of the world’s most influential teenagers (as per the Time magazine) to endorse the Xiaomi Mi 9. The company has also announced Wang Yuan special edition protective case for the Mi 9 which comes with a mint green colour and features a tough strap on the rear to provide a solid grip.
