Xiaomi’s Next Flagship Mi 7 Will Be Powered By Snapdragon 845by Ajinkya December 7, 2017
At the Qualcomm event, Xiaomi Founder and CEO, Lei Jun announced that the upcoming Mi 7 smartphone will be powered by the Snapdragon 845. However, it may not be the first device to sport the chipset as it will be manufactured by Samsung Foundry. So, much like the previous Snapdragon 835, this too will power a Samsung smartphone before other manufacturers lay their hands on it. Not much about the Qualcomm’s next generation chipset is known apart from some on-board AI (Artificial Intelligence) capabilities.
Talking about the phone itself, the device will come with a 5.8-inch FullHD+ OLED display made by Samsung. It will have very-thin bezels. In retrospect, the Mi 6 is a conventional smartphone with thick bezels. The design of the Mi 7 however could be akin to the Samsung Galaxy S8.
In terms of materials, reports suggest that Xiaomi will use glass/ceramic back to enable wireless charging. The Snapdragon 845 SoC will be coupled with next gen Adreno GPU and may come in 6 GB and 8 GB RAM options.
On the photography front, the device is said to sport 19 MP + 19 MP rear dual-camera lens. Out of the two sensors, one is expected to be a special low-light module with an aperture of f/1.7. The dual-lens will enable bokeh effect within the pictures. The selfie-shooter could be a 16-megapixel sensor with AI beautification modes. The 3,350 mAh battery is expected to power up the flagship device.
The device is expected to go on sale in the first half of next year. Reports suggest that Mi 7 will be priced at CNY 2,699 (approx. Rs 27,000), which would undercut the OnePlus 5T and Nokia 8. Xiaomi although being a top smartphone manufacturer in India has failed to impress in the premium segment. The Mi Mix 2 hasn’t brought volumes to the company as it faces stiff competition by arch-rival OnePlus. With the Mi 7, Xiaomi may want to change the odds in its favour by launching it with an aggressive price tag.
