Chinese handset maker Xiaomi has launched its first Android Go smartphone dubbed as Redmi Go at an event held in New Delhi, India. The phone is the most affordable one yet by the company. It was first introduced by the company in late January and was released in the Philippines a few days later. The highlights of the device include Google’s Android Go program (a stripped-down version of Android), HD display, Snapdragon 425 SoC and 3,000mAh battery. The company is also touting Google Assistant Hindi support along with support for over 20 Indian languages.

Xiaomi Redmi Go Price and Availability in India

The Xiaomi Redmi Go is priced in India at 4,499 for the 1GB RAM + 8GB inbuilt storage variant. The smartphone also has another variant with 1GB RAM + 16GB inbuilt storage, however the same is not yet launched in India. The phone will go on sale via eCommerce giant Flipkart.com, Mi.com, and Mi Home stores starting from 12pm on March 22. The phone will be available in Black and Blue colour options.

The Xiaomi Redmi Go bears a 5-inch HD display with 720×1280 pixel screen resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio and 296ppi pixel density. Under the hood, the device is powered by quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC, coupled with 1GB of RAM and the Adreno 308 GPU. The inbuilt storage capacity of the device is 8GB which is expandable via microSD card up to 128GB. As mentioned earlier, the phone will run Android Go which allows low-end phones to deliver faster performance despite RAM and storage restrictions. It basically comes loaded with ‘lite’ versions of key Google apps such as Maps Go, Assistant Go, and Google Go. In terms of camera, the phone gets a 8-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, HDR mode and full HD video recording support. For selfies, there’s a 5-megapixel snapper on the front with f/2.2 aperture and HDR support. All of this will be backed by a 3,000mAh battery, which Xiaomi claims can last for 10 days.

Redmi Go users will get unlimited storage on Google Photos, and Google Assistant in Hindi, English and ‘Hinglish’. It comes with some India-centric features such as support for over 20 regional languages and Google Assistant in Hindi. The phone also features dual mic noise reduction for better call quality. Connectivity features included in the phone are 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.1, GPS/ A-GPS, Micro-USB, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It weighs 137 grams and measures 140.4×70.1×8.35 mm.

In terms of design, the Redmi Go features substantial bezels on all four sides, three capacitive touch buttons at the bottom of the screen and a plastic build which is brushed with metal finish.

The Redmi Go is expected to compete against the likes of Nokia 1 Plus, Samsung Galaxy J2 Core, JioPhone 2 among other phones.
