Xiaomi Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A Budget Smartphones Launched in China

Smartphone maker Xiaomi has launched two new affordable smartphones in its hometown China- Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A, which are successors of last year’s Redmi 5 and Redmi 5A respectively. Given the success of its predecessors, the Redmi 6 and 6A are also expected to continue the streak.

Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A Price and Availability:

The Redmi 6 is priced 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant is priced at CNY 799 (roughly Rs. 8,400) and the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variant is priced at CNY 999 (roughly Rs. 10,500). While the Redmi 6A is priced at CNY 599 (roughly Rs. 6,300).

Both the phones will go on sale in China this week starting from June 15. There is no word yet on the availability of the phones outside of China yet, but the India launch can be expected later on in the year.

Redmi 6 Specifications:

The Redmi 6 is powered by MediaTek Helio P22 processor (significant improvement over the Redmi 5) coupled with 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB of internal storage, depending on the variant. The storage can be expanded using a microSD card. It runs Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 10 out of the box. The battery capacity of the phone is 3,000mAh. Connectivity features include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, 4G VoLTE, and an IR blaster.

The device features a 5.45-inch display with 720 x 1440 HD+ resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. In the camera department, there’s a horizontally stacked dual camera setup consisting 12MP primary sensor + 5MP secondary sensor capable of capturing portrait shots with hardware-level bokeh. The front hosts a 5MP AI driven camera with facial unlock feature. The fingerprint sensor is situated at the back of the device.

Redmi 6A Specifications:

The Redmi 6A is a lower variant of the two in terms of specifications. It sports a 5.45-inch display with 720 x 1440 HD+ resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the device is powered by a MediaTek Helio A22 processor clocked at 2 GHz. The RAM is 2GB and internal storage capacity is 16GB, which can be expanded via microSD card.

The device runs MIUI 10 on top of Android 8.1 Oreo and is backed by a 3,000mAh non-removable battery. In terms of optics, there’s a 13MP camera with LED flash at the rear and a 5MP camera on the front for selfies and video calls. Both the cameras feature AI capability. For security purpose, there’s face unlock but it lacks fingerprint sensor.

It will be interesting to see how long Xiaomi takes to launch the Redmi 6 in India considering its one of the key markets for the company.
