According to a new report by Digitimes, Xiaomi Mi 7 could become the first Android smartphone to feature 3D facial sensing technology. At present, only Apple has been able to successfully launch the said technology, while none of the Android smartphone makers have been able to do so.

Last year Apple launched iPhone X with top display notch and the same became a trend with Android handset makers. Almost all Android OEMs copied the notch in their flagships of 2018, but they were unable to follow the 3D facial recognition system. Seems like Xiaomi will be the first Android phone maker to launch the feature. However, we will have to wait at least until the 3rd quarter of 2018 (or maybe longer than that) due to insufficient capability to integrate related hardware and software at 3D sensing solution providers, as reported by Digitimes. The phone was earlier speculated to launch in first half of 2018.

This doesn’t mean that there is no face unlock feature present in current Android smartphones. But currently all Android smartphones that feature facial recognition use a 2D technology which is not as secured as Apple’s FaceID as i is based on 3D. So, basically the Android phones with facial recognition feature use a software program to recognize then unlock the phone. On the other hand, Apple uses dedicated sensors, dot projector and infrared camera to scan and recognize the face more accurately which makes it incredibly secured.

Samsung was one of the top contenders in the race to become the first Android phone maker to launch the 3D Facial recognition, but the report also mentions that Samsung is unlikely to launch smartphones with 3D sensing until 2019. This will disappoint a lot of Samsung fans out there.

For those interested, here are the expected specifications of Xiaomi Mi 7:

The Mi 7 is expected to sport a 5.65-inch Full HD+ screen with an iPhone X like notch. It will feature a metal-and-glass body design. The device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor along with at least 6GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. The dual-SIM phone will support 4G LTE, gigabit Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, stereo speakers, a fingerprint reader and USB Type-C port. The phone will be dust and water resistant. It will run MIUI 10 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. There will be a dual-camera setup and 4K video recording capabilities placed on the rear of the device.
