Chinese smartphone makers, Xiaomi, has confirmed the launch of Redmi S2 on 10th May through its Weibo page. Two teasers have been released for the smartphone, which indicates it could be exclusively sold through suning.com. The announcement of Redmi S2 will be made at an event held in China on 10th May. The teasers are as seen below:

 The Redmi S2 will be the first smartphone in the Redmi S series smartphones that will focus on value for money and will aim to delight selfie lovers. The Redmi S2 handset is very similar to Redmi Note 5 Pro and the more recent Mi 6X. It will feature unique u-shared antenna bands at the top and bottom edges of the rear panel. A recent leak has reported the cost of the Redmi S2 to be around Rs. 11,700. There is no official announcement on its pricing yet, but speculations suggest that it will be priced a bit higher than the Redmi 5 which starts at Rs. 7999 for its 2 GM RAM variant. The Redmi S2 pricing might start from well below the Rs. 10000 level and could be launched as an Android One device in India.

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 will boast of an IPS LCD display measuring 5.99-inches diagonally. It will have an aspect ratio of 18:9 and resolution will be 720 x 1440 HD+. Except for a lower resolution, the display of the Redmi S2 and overall design will be similar to that of Redmi Note 5 and its Pro variant.

The Redmi S2 is expected to be powered by the same chipset that powers Redmi Note 5. The chipset is called the octa-core Snapdragon 625 chipset from Qualcomm. The smartphone will be available in three variants of memory configuration – 2GB RAM + 16GB storage, 3GB RAM + 32GB storage, and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. The smartphone will have a hybrid dual SIM configuration which indicates that the slot for second SIM can also be used as a microSD card slot.

If rumours are to be believed, the Xiaomi Redmi S2 will feature a 12MP + 5MP dual-camera setup at the rear. The sensors are placed vertically, one of top of the other with an LED flash placed between them. The front-facing camera of the smartphone is a delight for selfie lovers and is packed with a 16 MP camera. The Redmi S2 can seamlessly connect with Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, 4G VoLTE, and an IR blaster. It has a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor to enable biometric authentication. As per rumours, its battery is of 3000 mAh. The handset weighs 170 grams and is expected to be powered by Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9 out of the box as confirmed in a TENAA listing.
