We recently reported that Xiaomi-backed gaming smartphone brand Black Shark is going to launch its first smartphone in the European market on November 16. Earlier last month, Razer launched the successor to its first gaming smartphone dubbed as Razer Phone 2. There is another gaming device available in the market i.e. Asus ROG Phone, which was launched by Asus in June at Computex 2018. Design and display are two of the most important factors in a gaming smartphone. In terms of the design, the Black Shark features a metal unibody design with Green and Black coloured design aesthetic. It sports a similar design language as that of Razer Phone and is targeted towards premium mobile-focused gamers. The Razer Phone 2 has a huge chin and forehead like its predecessor which houses the two stereo speakers and room to hold the phone without touching the screen. The device is IP67 rated for resistance against sudden water splashes. The Asus ROG features an Aluminum and glass body.

In terms of display, the Xiaomi Black Shark features 5.99-inch full-HD+ IPS LCD panel with screen resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels, refresh rate of 60Hz, an aspect ratio of 18:9 and a pixel density of 403ppi. The Razer Phone 2 features a 5.72-inch IGZO LCD QHD display with a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels and refresh rate of 120HZ. The display comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 layer of protection. The Asus Rog Phone flaunts a slightly bigger 6-inch full-HD+ AMOLED display with 1080 x 2160 pixel resolution, 18:9 ratio aspect ratio, 90Hz refresh rate and 403 ppi pixel density. Being gaming devices, all three phones feature a good display, but the Razer Phone 2 gets an edge over the other two due to its own IGZO technology.

In terms of dimensions, the Black Shark measures 161.6 x 75.4 x 9.3 mm and weighs 190 grams. The Razer Phone 2 measures 158.8 x 76.2 x 8.7 mm and weighs in at 200 grams. While the Asus ROG Phone has measurement of 158.5 x 79 x 8.5 mm and weight of 200 grams. So, the ROG Phone is the slimmest and the lightest of the three phones.

In terms of software, the Black Shark runs Android 8.0 Oreo operating system out of the box with Joy UI on top. The Razer Phone 2 is shipped with a slightly modified version of Google’s Android 8.1 operating system. The Asus ROG Phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box.

Another important parameter to look for in a gaming smartphone is the battery performance. The Black Shark is backed by a 4,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support. The Razer Phone 2 packs also packs a similar 4,000mAh battery with QuickCharge 4.0+ and fast Qi wireless charging. While the Asus ROG Phone is fueled by a 4,000mAh battery that has support for fast charging and promises 7 hours of Wi-Fi gameplay. So, all three phones are at par in terms of battery and there’s no clear winner here.

Xiaomi Black Shark is world’s first liquid-cooled handset which is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC along with an Adreno 630 GPU, and 6GB or 8GB of RAM. The inbuilt storage capacity options are 64GB and 128GB. Unfortunately, there’s no options to expand the storage by using an external microSD card.

The Razer Phone 2 draws power from Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor paired with the Adreno 630 GPU and 8GB of RAM. There are two options in terms of onboard storage- 64GB and 128GB with an option to expand the same up to 1TB using a microSD card. The phone comes embedded with Vapor Chamber Cooling technology to keep the device cool during intense gaming sessions.

The Asus ROG Phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor paired with Adreno 630 GPU and 8GB of RAM. The internal storage capacity of the phone is 512GB. The phone sports a GameCool vapour-chamber cooling system with detachable AeroActive Cooler for extra cooling during extended gaming sessions.

In terms of optics, Xiaomi Black Shark features dual camera set up on the rear comprising of a 12-megapixel rear camera with dual-tone LED flash and f/1.75 aperture + a secondary 20-megapixel camera with f/1.75 aperture. The front hosts a 20-megapixel snapper with f/2.2 aperture for selfies and video calls.

The Razer Phone 2 also features a dual camera module on the back which consists of a 12-megapixel primary sensor with f/1.75 aperture, optical image optimisation (OIS) and Dual PDAF + a 12-megapixel secondary sensor with f/2.6 aperture telephoto lens and dual-tone LED flash. On the front, there’s an 8-megapixel selfie snapper with f/2.0 aperture.

The Asus ROG Phone comes with a dual rear camera with 12-megapixel and 8-megapixel sensors. For selfies and video calls, there’s an 8-megapixel camera.

The Black Shark seems to have a decent camera set up, at least on paper. Nonetheless, camera output is not a very critical factor when it comes to choosing a good gaming smartphone.

Xiaomi Black Shark vs Razer Phone 2 vs Asus ROG Phone: Price

The Xiaomi Black Shark is priced in China at CNY 2,999 (approx. Rs. 31,500) for the base variant i.e. 6GB RAM + 64GB storage and CNY 3,499 (approx. Rs. 36,500) for the top variant i.e. 8GB RAM + 128GB storage. The available colour options are Polar Night and Sky Grey. The Razer Phone 2 comes with a price tag of $799 (matte Satin version) which is roughly Rs. 59,500. Asus ROG Phone comes with a price tag of $899 which is roughly Rs. 65,000.

The Asus ROG Phone is a winner in this battle in terms of features and specifications as it features an impressive display, big battery with fast charging support, water resistant body and a good hardware along with cooling system. However, it is also the most expensive of the three phones. If there are budget constraints, then you can consider either of the Black Shark or the Razer Phone 2.
