Vivo NEX S

Vivo‘s Apex concept phone that was first unveiled at the MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2018, has just come to reality. The Chinese smartphone maker has finally launched a near bezel-less smartphone Vivo NEX S along with an affordable variant dubbed as NEX A. The phones were launched at an event held in company’s hometown China. Some of the key highlights of the phone are retractable selfie camera, in-display fingerprint sensor and screen soundcasting technology instead of a traditional earpiece wherein the screen vibrates to create sound.

Vivo NEX S and NEX A Specifications:

Both Vivo NEX S and NEX A are nearly bezel-less but not completely bezel-less as we saw in Vivo APEX concept. The phones still have a slight chin at the bottom, but it is considerably smaller than the other samrtphones available in the market with an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 91.24%. Both the phones feature metal and glass construction.

The two devices differ in terms of performance. The NEX S is powered by an octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC coupled with Adreno 630 GPU, whereas the NEX A is powered by an octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC coupled with Adreno 616 GPU. Another difference is that the NEX S comes in two variants- 8GB RAM + 128GB internal storage and 8GB RAM + 256GB internal storage. But the NEX A comes in one variant i.e. 6GB RAM + 128GB internal storage. The NEX S sports an in-display fingerprint scanner, while the NEX A features a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Both the phones sport a 6.59-inch full HD+ Super AMOLED display with 2316 x 1080 pixels resolution and an aspect ratio of 19.3:9. They run Android 8.1 Oreo with Funtouch OS 4.0 and Energy UI skinned on top and are backed by a 4,000mAh battery with Fast Charge support. Connectivity options provided include Dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth 5.0 LE and a USB Type-C port.

In terms of optics, both the phones feature a dual camera setup on the rear consisting of a 12MP primary dual pixel sensor with 4-axis OIS, f/1.8 aperture, phase detection autofocus and a secondary 5MP sensor with f/2.4 aperture. The front hosts a unique 8MP pop-up camera with f/2.0 aperture for selfies and video calls. The selfie camera pops up automatically as soon as the camera app is launched. The pop-up camera has helped the company to achieve the higher screen-to-body ratio without having the controversial iPhone X like top display notch.

Vivo Nex will be rolled out in other Asian markets like Singapore and Hong Kong after China. However, there’s no word as yet on the launch of the phone in India.
