World’s most valuable start-up Uber has decided to purchase 24,000 autonomous cars from Volvo. The latter is one of the most popular premium car maker in the world with incredible safety record.

Under the deal, Uber will purchase the XC90 SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles) from the Swedish company, which is now owned by Chinese Zhejiang Geely Holding. The cars are developed on Volvo’s modular, in-house SPA (Scalable Product Architecture). This advanced car architectures is currently used in top-of-the-line 90 series cars.

Volvo engineers worked closely with their counterparts at Uber to develop these XC90 SUVs. It has all the necessary safety, redundancy, and autonomous driving technologies baked-in. These Volvo XC90 SUVs are expected to be delivered to Uber in a next couple of years. As you would expect, the cars will be first rolled out in the US. Volvo is also planning to use the same platform to build its own autonomous car to be released in 2021.
