iPhone Evolution

Ever since the genesis of the human race, Apple has been a witness to evolution (read ‘Adam & Eve+ forbidden fruit+ Garden of Eve). So keeping up with the legacy, Apple has once again been the reason for the evolution of something great- the iPhone. In 2007, Apple Inc. had its then-CEO, Steve Jobs, unveil the very first iPhone to the world. Taking centre stage at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, Jobs introduced the world to what was to revolutionise the mobile phone industry soon. Thus, in January 2007, the legacy of the iPhone started.

With rumours of the upcoming iPhone 7 making the rounds and rousing curiosity left, right, & centre, the tech world and users are already doing a splendid job of guessing what innovative features, what new state-of-the-art design, will the latest iPhone sport.

However, until the day the iPhone 7 is officially revealed, let’s take a trip down memory lane and see how the never-been-humble iPhone has evolved over the last nine years…

Iphone evolution

With the first iPhone (which had no accompanying modifier), the world learnt that your mobile phone could be your music player, memory book, and web browsing buddy, all-in-one. With a screen size of 3.5” and display resolution of 320 x 480p (you may laugh at the resolution now, but understand its worth almost a decade ago), the iPhone was creating waves with its premium looks and specs. Of course, when you put in $150 million, you end up getting a spectacular final product!

The next change came with the third iteration- iPhone 3GS in 2009 when the screen got an oleophobic coating to prevent any unpleasant fingerprints on the screen.

The 2010 iPhone 4 saw the 960×640p Retina Display replace the lesser 320 x 480p resolution.

The year 2012 was marked by the stunning iPhone 5 which came with a larger screen of 4” and 640 x 1136p resolution.

The eighth generation of the iPhone- 6 & 6 Plus- saw the iPhone enter the phablet market. With the 4.7” (1334 x 750p) iPhone 6 and 5.5” (1920 x 1080p) iPhone 6S, Apple wanted to appeal to the everyday user who wanted something between a phone and a tablet. And it did.

Nothing new on the screen front with the 2015 launches- 6S & 6S Plus.

In March 2016, Apple launched the iPhone SE which sports the hardware of the iPhone 6S but comes with a 4” screen, a request made by many iPhone users with smaller hands!

It’s a given that while taking a groupie, the one with an iPhone needs to take the shot. Why? Coz it’s got the best camera, that’s why! The first iPhone came with a 2MP camera, which was way more than what the other phones offered way back in 2007.

The iPhone 3GS saw the camera upgrade to 3.2MP with the ability to take videos too, but what really made people sit up and take notice of a phone’s camera was the front facing camera that would be the key to Apple’s new exclusive video calling service- FaceTime. Oh, and it also had a better 5MP primary camera that was capable of taking HD videos.

Next up, was the 4S with its fancy 8MP primary camera which could take 1080p videos!

The iPhone 5C saw the addition of a backside illumination sensor for better FaceTiming. The 5S got with it dual- LED flash and larger aperture.

Fans of the iPhone’s camera received tremendous joy with the iPhone 6S & 6S Plus’ 12MP iSight and 5MP FaceTime camera.

The iPhone’s design has always exuded a classy appeal. On its launch, iPhone 4 was the sleekest Smartphone and came in an uninsulated stainless steel frame. The iPhone 5 sported the design that many aped- a lightweight aluminium-based body.

Deciding to produce something a little less expensive, but carrying the half-eaten Apple logo nevertheless, the Cupertino-based bosses put a polycarbonate body on the new iPhone 5C which was then made available in vibrant colours of blue, green, yellow, white, & black.

The 5S redeemed the Apple appeal by making available a handset with a gold colour scheme. Thank God!

The September of 2014 saw the most elegant of all iPhones yet- a metal unibody design, with the sleekest frame that made every user handle the phone with butterfingers! The most well-received iPhone design so far, it has sold millions and millions of handsets solely due to its premium feel.

The succeeding generation of iPhone was made of a tougher 7000 series aluminium, and came in rose gold colour variant too! Now that was one beautiful addition to the already striking handset.

Smooth, robust, and a multitasker’s dream. That’s what the iPhone’s processor has always been. Starting with the Samsung 412 MHz ARM 11 chipset in the original iPhone, the latest generation of the iPhones incorporate the powerful A9 chipset, an Apple product, a product that found itself a part of an iPhone starting with the iPhone 4. Also incorporated is the hexa-core GPU and M9 motion co-processor which is what allows your iPhone to double up as your fitness tracker.

In between these came the iPhone 3GS with 32GB of internal storage and 256MB of RAM.

iPhone 4S got the A5 chipset and a storage capacity of 64GB. Then came the A6, the A7… you get the picture, right?

iphone 1OS 10 evolution

Coming to the operating system that is the backbone of the Apple ecosystem- iOS. The Apple OS has come a long way from its original version which was simply called, ‘iOS’, to what it currently is- the beta version of iOS 10.

Starting with the iPhone 4 which got the first major update in the form of iOS 4, almost every new generation of the iPhone has seen an updated version of iOS.

Planned for a September 2016 release, iOS 10 is expected to run on millions of Apple devices by the end of the year.

Iphone touch id fingerprint scanner

Apple takes its users’ security seriously, and that’s why the iPhone 5S saw the inclusion of a TouchID fingerprint scanner, that became the norm for other high-end Smartphones soon. The 6S & 6S Plus got a faster and more efficient 2nd gen TouchID with them.

Adding an altogether different level of convenience to the power of touch was the 3D Touch technology which sensed the pressure of touch on the screen to reveal certain functions. Not something that the previous gen of iPhones had…

The 6 & 6 Plus brought with it Apple Pay thanks to the NFC chip that the handsets included.

However, the best thing that came out of the iPhone’s evolution was its baby, Siri. Considered the best voice-assistant today, Siri first found herself a place in iPhone 4S… and post that, Siri has just gotten better & better with many app integrations.
