The Cuckoo’s Calling is crime thriller novel set in London with all the required elements making it a clear winner.  Things get even more interesting when the author’s profile states this being his debut novel!! Maybe it’s time to give it a more thorough reading.

JK-Rowling-The-Cuckoos-CallingThe story revolves around the death of the model Lula Landry, lovingly called ‘cuckoo’ by her family and near friends. Though, Cuckoo is said to have died by falling from her hotel balcony but her brother John Bristow refuses to buy this story as put forth by the police and hence approaches Cormoran Strike, a private investigator and a war veteran to investigate the case.  Tight money conditions and a couple of debts piling up compelled to this case his best shot. As Cormoran Strikes digs up more information and mingles with the glamorous members of the society, the cause of her death gets even more mysterious.

How much truth is there in this old adage” Don’t judge a book by its cover”? Well, for this one, most people did do that and before the revelations of its real author, a minimal figure of a few thousand copies being sold.  Once the truth popped out, the number of books sold has been simply phenomenal considering that people have even opted for its e-book version as well.

Written by J.K. Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith who is an ex-plain clothes military person who had left the Army and set up his private security business in the year 2003, this murder mystery is really well written for a debut writer.  With most critics predicting a series of murder mysteries following this one, a positive sign, you can keep waiting for more from J.K. Rowling, one of the most successful authors of this century. Synonymous for writing the Harry Potter Series and two small volumes which have been translated in almost 67 languages even in Latin and Ancient Greek which speaks of the immense popularity of the series. For those of you who wish to catch up on the series, here is the list –

1. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Her first novel for adult readers ‘The Casual Vacancy’ was released in 2012, post the success of the Harry Porter series. The book has received a mixed response from the critics and its paperback version is likely to be released in the near future.

On the personal front, J.K. Rowling has expressed that she hopes to continue writing under this pseudonym for she enjoyed not only writing it but also getting feedbacks without correlating the novel, her writing style and much more with her earlier published works.
