As the novel coronavirus is rapidly spreading around the world, the tech giants like Vivo, Oppo, and Samsung shut down their factories in Greater Noida. The shutdown is done after the UP government issued an order for the lockdown to contain the virus and decelerate the spread.

The Head of Corporate Communications, Samsung India, Partha Ghosh, said in a statement that the health and safety of their employees is the first priority. We are here to provide safety to our employees and in conformity with the government’s guidelines to stop the spread of Covid-19, we suspended the manufacturing along with all the R&D, sales/marketing operations and directed our employees to work from home, he added. However, services such as customer support will be continued with limited staff. The Noida facility of Samsung is India’s largest and it’s capable of producing 120 million units annually.

Earlier in March, Samsung halted the production in its Gumi facility in South Korea after positive cases were reported from the facility. However, the production was shifted temporarily to Vietnam to meet the existing deadlines. In the AGM last week, HS Kim, the company’s co-CEO said that the growth already started to slow down as it’s the only initial impact of Covid-19 on the global economy. He said that the company hasn’t yet estimated the damage coronavirus did on the distribution network along with the production. The company is taking the help of statistics to create a future work plan.

ET Telecom published a report that Oppo and Vivo will also keep the factories shut until Tuesday. The future working will be set after consultation from the UP government, the report said.

Coronavirus has almost put the whole world on lockdown along with a majority of countries including India effectively banning people from unnecessary movements.
