Sony India has announced a huge price cut across three of its smartphone models namely the Xperia XZs, Xperia L2 and Xperia R1. The Sony Xperia XZs will now be priced at Rs 29,990. This means that the smartphone’s price has been slashed by Rs. 10.000 when compared with its previous price of Rs. 39,990. The Xperia L2 is now priced at Rs 14,990 as against its previous price of Rs.19,990 which translates to a discount of Rs.5,000. The Xperia R1 that was available at Rs.10,990 will now be made available at Rs. 9,990 – a discount of Rs. 1,000. One of the main reasons for the price cut is due to the increased competition from Chinese smartphone makers who are offering smartphones with great features at very affordable prices.

The Xperia XZs is one of Sony’s flagship devices. It was launched in April last year. The smartphone features an aluminium unibody design – a standard design for most of the Sony smartphones. The smartphone packs in a 5.2-inch LCD display. The screen comes with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Under the hood, it is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 CPU. The processor is coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage. The Xperia XZs features a 19-megapixel main camera with f/2.0 aperture and a 13-megapixel selfie sensor in the front. The smartphone runs on Android 8.0 Oreo. The Xperia XZs comes with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The smartphone is powered by a 2,900mAh battery.

The Xperia L2 was launched for the mid-market segment in January 2018. The smartphone features a 5.5-inch 720p HD display. The processor that powers the phone is a MediaTek MT6737T CPU. It is complemented by 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. The smartphone has a 13-megapixel main camera and an 8-megapixel secondary camera. It runs on the Android Nougat and has a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. It is powered by a 3,300mAh battery.

Sony Xperia R1 is the cheapest among the three smartphones. It comes with a 5.2-inch 720p HD display. The smartphone features 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. The storage can be expanded up to 256GB. The smartphone has a rear camera of 13-megapixels. Its selfie camera has an 8-megapixel sensor. It does not offer a fingerprint sensor. The smartphone runs the older Android Nougat and is powered by a 2,620mAh battery.

The company has said that the new prices will be effective throughout India immediately. It will be available and applicable across online retail channels such as Amazon, Flipkart. It will also be available offline and at merchant outlets including Sony Centers and other major electronic stores. We will have to wait and watch whether the significant reduction in prices will boost sales of the Japanese electronics company as it still does not offer designs and value for money that the smartphone users in India seek.
