Samsung’s Galaxy S3 is yet to receive the official Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS update, but it’s reported to be getting the same soon. Several other Samsung’s flagships including the Galaxy S5, Galaxy S3 Mini, Galaxy S4 Zoom etc. have already got the update. Thus the S3 will most likely skip the 4.3 Jelly Bean update and get the KitKat very soon (around March or April). The Galaxy Note 2 is also reported to get the OS update along with the S3.

The OS update will bring host of new features and UI tweaks like transparent status bar with white icons and an immersive mode providing full-screen reading and gaming. Some of the other updates include integrated location menu, enhanced messaging, upgraded Google Mobile Service apps etc.

Key updates as per Android 4.4 KitKat OS:

  • Immersive Display
  • Integrated Location Menu
  • Improved Caller ID
  • Priority Contact List (generated automatically based on the frequency of calls)
  • Unified Hangouts Messaging
  • Pre-loaded Emoji Emotion Icons
  • Updated Lock Screen Features
  • Efficient Multi Tasking
  • NFC and Wireless Printing
  • Upgraded Google Mobile Service (GMS) Apps (automatic back-up of photos and video clips)
  • Improved Performance (improved battery life)

The OS update expected to be rolled out in phases i.e. not everyone will get the update at the same time. There is no official word from Samsung about the OTA update. Stay tuned with us for further updates.
