South Korean tech giant Samsung recently launched the 2018 edition of its Galaxy A7 budget smartphone with triple rear camera set up, while earlier this year we witnessed launch of several mid-range devices by Oppo and Vivo including Oppo R17 and Vivo X23. In terms of design, all the three phones come with a strong build quality and give a classy feel in hand, which is really commendable for mid-range smartphones. The Galaxy A7 features a side mounted fingerprint sensor, while the Oppo R17 and Vivo X23 feature an in-display fingerprint sensor.

In terms of dimensions, the Galaxy A7 measures 159.8×76.8×7.5 mm and weighs about 172 grams. The Oppo R17 measures 157.5×74.9×7.5 mm and weighs in at 183 grams. While the Vivo X23 measures 157.7×74.1×7.5 mm and has weight of about 160 grams.

The Galaxy A7 features 6-inch full-HD+ Infinity Display with screen resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels and 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The Oppo R17 bears a 6.4-inch full-HD+ display with 1080×2340 pixel resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio resulting into 91.5 percent screen-to-body ratio. The display features a unique water-drop notch at the top which houses the selfie camera and helps to enhance the aspect ratio. The Vivo X23 also sports a waterdrop display notch. It features a 6.41-inch full-HD+ Super AMOLED display with 1080×2340 pixel resolution and aspect ratio of 19.5:9.

So’ the Galaxy A7 lags behind a bit in this department due to slightly smaller display and lesser resolution. While the Oppo R17 and Vivo X23 are at par with each other.

Under the hood, the Galaxy A7 is powered by an octa-core SoC clocked at 2GHz coupled with 4GB or 6GB of RAM. The inbuilt storage capacity options are 64GB and 128GB which can be expanded further up to 512GB via microSD card.

The Oppo R17 draws power from an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC along with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage.

The Vivo X23 is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 processor clocked up to 2.0GHz coupled with 8GB of RAM. The onboard storage capacity of the phone is 128GB which is expandable via microSD card.

The Oppo R17 has a slightly upper edge over the Vivo X23 here as it features a higher Snapdragon 710 SoC along with 8GB of RAM instead of the Snapdragon 670 found in Vivo X23.

The Galaxy A7 runs Android 8.0 Oreo operating system out of the box along with Samsung’s own Experience UX on top. The device is backed by a 3,300mAh battery.

The Oppo R17 is shipped with ColorOS 5.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system and is fueled by 3,700mAh battery that comes with Oppo’s proprietary Super VOOC fast charging technology.

The Vivo X23 features Funtouch OS 4.5 based on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system and is backed by a 3,400mAh battery with 22.5W fast charging support.

Oppo R17 wins the battle in this department and the Galaxy A7 comes last with lower 3,300mAh battery.

In the camera department, the Galaxy A7 and Oppo R17 Pro flaunt a triple rear camera set up but vary in terms of configuration.

The Galaxy A7 sports a triple rear camera consisting of a 24-megapixel autofocus sensor with f/1.7 aperture + 8-megapixel ultra wide secondary sensor with f/2.4 aperture + 5-megapixel depth sensor with fixed focus and f/2.2 aperture. For selfies, there’s a 24-megapixel fixed-focus camera with an f/2.0 aperture. The front camera also has an LED flash support.

The Oppo R17 bears a triple rear camera set up which comprises of 12-megapixel sensor with f/1.5-2.4 aperture + a 20-megapixel secondary sensor with a f/2.6 aperture + a third TOF 3D stereo camera. The front hosts a 25MP shooter for selfies and video calls.

The Vivo X23 features a dual camera set up on the rear which consists of 12-megapixel primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture + a 13-megapixel secondary sensor with f/2.4 aperture. There is a 12-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture on the front for selfies.

Although the on paper camera performance may vary from the actual one, our verdict goes in favor of the Galaxy A7 here. We’d still advise our users to refer to actual user reviews before making a purchase decision based on camera performance.

Samsung Galaxy A7 vs OPPO R17 Pro vs Vivo X23: Price in India

The Galaxy A7 pricing in India has been recently announced. The price starts at Rs. 23,990 for the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variant, while the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant comes with a price tag of Rs. 28,990. There are three color options available for the buyers- Blue, Black and Gold.

The Oppo R17 and Vivo X23 are yet to hit the Indian market but the Oppo R17 is priced in China at CNY 3,499 which is roughly Rs. 35,500 and it comes in Neon Purple and Streamer Blue color options. While the Vivo X23 is priced in China at CNY 3,498 which is roughly Rs. 36,500 and it comes in Fashion Orange, Fashion Purple, Midnight Blue, Phantom Purple, and Phantom Red colour options. However, it needs to be noted that the actual price in India won’t be exactly as converted here.

Although, both Oppo R17 and Vivo X23 are good options to consider (whenever they are launched in India), our recommendation will be the Oppo R17 as it has a slightly better processor and packs a higher battery with fast charging support as compared to Vivo X23. Oppo is also known for producing good selfie cameras and thus the R17 a good option for selfie lovers as well.
