If Tomorrow Comes - Book Review“If Tomorrow Comes” is a gripping tale of transition of an innocent girl, well-settled in her career, into a powerful con player, because of the situations that life puts her into. This is one book that gets the readers to fail in their anticipatory skills badly and manages to throw surprises quite liberally, making way for effortless turning of pages.

Tracey Whitney, a pretty software engineer in her youth, happens to be the protagonist in the story. Deeply affected by the suicide of her mother, Dorothy after she’s swindled of her life’s earnings and savings by somebody, Tracey decides to avenge her mother’s death. Though she carries out her attack on the person responsible for the death of her mother, she finds herself tricked into pleading guilty for crimes she hadn’t committed. Her conviction (15 years sentence) distances her from her fiancée, hailing from a very reputed family despite the fact that she’s carrying his child in her womb. Her imprisonment and subsequent miscarriage shape the things to come and form the main plot of the story.

A transcontinental setting, spanning Europe and America ensure grandeur to the story, as Tracey starts out on her (mis)adventures as a con woman. The story powerfully demonstrates how the conviction of an innocent can lead to the birth of a criminal. Dumped by life, Tracey not just acquires a newfound status as a thief; but also the skills that propel her into an ‘elite’ league of con artists. Not willing to take the damage done to her life, lying down, Tracey sets out on a revengeful path, ruining the lives of those who ruined hers.

On her way, she comes across the male protagonist of the plot, Jeff Stevens, an equally competent con player and the way they compete with each other in their skills forms the plot for the last leg of the story. The story takes a turn towards sweet emotions when Tracey gets to know that Jeff considers her as much more than just a competitor / aide in the endeavours that they set out on.

There’s a tasteful blend of emotions coming together in the story, right from the beginning and it manages to maintain this sheen till the very end. The story is a wonderful cocktail of deceit, courage in the face of adversities, adventure, thrill, romance, humour and what not! And, it definitely leaves the reader awe-struck about the story-telling abilities of Sidney Sheldon. The novel makes an interesting read for all those who love fiction.
