Reliance Jio has announced the launch of its JioPhone 2 – the successor to its popular JioPhone. The phone was launched at the 41st Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries (RIL), the parent company of the Reliance Jio in Mumbai.

The Reliance JioPhone2 will offer an entry-level feature phone to first-time users. It will also enable users to have a cost-effective yet enriching and fulfilling experience of using the mobile on the Jio 4G network. The JioPhone 2 will be priced at Rs 2,999. It will be available for sale in India from August 15.

The JioPhone 2 which is priced a bit higher as compared to the JioPhone priced at Rs.1500, will offer significant improvements. However, users can exchange their existing feature phone and purchase a JioPhone 1 for just Rs. 501. The JioPhone 2 sports a new design and a physical QWERTY keypad. It is powered by a 2.4-inch QVGA screen. While it is larger than the first JioPhone, it looks very similar to the Blackberry phones. The phone runs only on 4G. It will be SIM-locked to the Jio network with VoLTE and VoWiFi connectivity to enable users to place voice calls seamlessly.

The JioPhone 2 will run on the KaiOS. It offers dual-SIM connectivity and is powered by a 2,000mAh battery. It supports additional storage through a micro-SD card. As for its camera, the smartphone offers a 2-megapixel rear camera and VGA front camera. It comes with a mono speaker, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, FM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC connectivity.

Reliance has announced support for WhatsApp and YouTube for the JioPhone KaiOS platform, along with Facebook. Apart from these, Jio has its own suite of apps and services available for the platform, including JioTV, JioExpress Music and a host of other content services that will further boost the new phone’s appeal.

The JioPhone 2 will be available for sale from 15th of August – India’s independence day. The earlier JioPhone was a huge success due to its low price and content offerings. It is still the highest selling feature phone in the country. The JioPhone 2 is expected to further bolster the sales of the feature phone and increase the adoption of Jio’s 4G-only mobile network.

Commenting on the development, Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries said, “Today, we are launching a brand new JioPhone scheme, JioPhone “Monsoon Hungama”. Under this offer, by exchanging your old feature phone, you can get a brand new JioPhone for an effective entry price of just Rs 501.”

Ambani added, “Starting July 21st, users can exchange their existing feature phone for a brand new JIOPHONE for just Rs 501! We have thus reduced the effective entry cost of the JioPhone from Rs 1500 to as low as Rs 501. Starting 15th August, our JioPhone 2 will be available at an introductory price of only Rs 2999.”
