THE RELIANCE JIO EFFECT: OTHERS SLASH TARIFFS TO CONTINUE TO “JIO” TOO

by September 29, 2016
Reliance Jio Effect

More than a decade ago, Mukesh Ambani-led a revolution and changed the Indian telecom industry forever. He made incoming calls free for Reliance users which effectively made communication much easier, much cheaper.

As they say, history repeats itself. In 2016, we have the same man leading another revolution, and this time, the weapon is named, ‘Reliance Jio’. On September 1, all the major news channels broadcasted what will be remembered as a path-breaking announcement- Mukesh Ambani, in his capacity as the Chairman of Reliance Industries stated that the time has come for “datagiri”, an opportunity for each Indian to use unlimited data for unlimited good things. What he said at the Annual General Meeting is what promises to change the Indian telecom industry forever.

AS JIO BREATHES, OTHERS STRUGGLE

What he said then is what resulted in a 6.4% drop in market share for Bharti Airtel, and a 10.7% loss for Idea – two of the biggest telecom service providers in the country. Take a look below at the various tariffs and plans that Reliance Jio offers and you will know why the incumbent bigshots of the Indian telecom have been sweating ever since Jio’s entry into the market:

As can be seen, every Reliance Jio consumer will have unlimited voice calls, all over India, for as long as they are a Jio user. This, in itself is a major selling point of Reliance Jio. However, that’s not it; Jio offers 4G data plans for as low as ₹50 for every Gigabyte of data which translates to Reliance Jio offering the cheapest data plan not only in India but also across the globe!

THE JIO WAVE: RELIANCE V/S VODAFONE V/S AIRTEL V/S IDEA

Now let’s see a comparison of all the tariffs of Jio, Vodafone, Airtel, and Idea in the Delhi telecom circle:

Further, let us compare which operator offers the best plan for the most data-hungry user. Priced at ₹4999, Jio’s most expensive plan offers a whopping 75GB of data to its user, while Airtel’s costliest comes at ₹3346 and gives the user a measly 20GB of data during the day and another 20 for the night. Vodafone does a little better at its costliest plan priced at ₹3999 in which it offers 40GB of unlimited data whose fair usage policy reduces the speed to 40kbps.

VODAFONE’S ATTEMPT TO TEMPT

With Jio offering number portability, allowing users from other networks to join the Jio world, other telecom companies are coming up with new offers to retain their customers as well as lure new ones. One such attempt is by Vodafone.

The company has launched a new offer wherein users with a new 4G enabled handset can avail of 10GB of 4G data for the price of just 1GB, for up to 3 months. However, the catch here is that users in most of Vodafone’s circles will be able to use this additional 9GB of data only between midnight to 6am! A Vodafone user will have to recharge with at least ₹250 to avail of this offer while a Jio user will need to get the ₹999 plan to get the 10GB worth of data for the same duration of a month. However, users get access to unlimited data between 2 am – 5 am.

With free unlimited voice calls, no roaming charges, no blackout conditions, and extremely attractive data plans, Reliance Jio is surely making it hard for the other players in the market to reach the bar which has been raised.

With Mukesh Ambani collaborating with younger brother, Anil Ambani, on spectrum sharing which is needed to run Jio’s services efficiently across the country, India might just reach unprecedented levels of connectivity, not just in urban areas, but in rural too.
