Mukesh Ambani, CEO of Reliance Industries Limited, announced today a revolutionary new 4G network called Reliance Jio. Why revolutionary? Absolutely free voice calls! Yes, you heard it right, and no there are no conditions that apply. The newest 4G service will only charge for data usage and nothing else. All calls to any other network are free of charge, including while roaming all over India. This is bound to be a game changer. Also, the tariff plans for 4G data usage are almost 1/10th of what other networks provide. Reliance Jio is offering a base price of Rs. 50/ GB in a time when such a rate is not even applicable for 3G services on other networks.

Mukesh Ambani stressed on the importance of being connected and the availability of data. Reliance Jio aims to make data available to as many people as it can.
Jio will provide only ten tariff plans, starting with a Rs. 149 plan for 28 days that shall provide 300 MB of 4G data. The next plan costs Rs. 499 and offers 4 GB during the day for 28 days and unlimited 4G internet during the night. The plans go on increasing based on usage up to 4999 for 28 days that provides 75 GB data. All these packs also include a Jio app subscription worth Rs 1250 and some amount of data for Jio Net Hot Spots. A full suite of Jio apps for streaming Audio and Video will also be available, free of cost, until 31st December 2017 for all Jio users.
The services will be launched on September 5th, and Mukesh Ambani hopes to attract as many as a 100 million customers. Jio users will be getting free data services for the first four months as part of a welcoming scheme. Also, students can avail an additional 25% data on showing a valid college ID while signing up for a Jio connection.
During the hour-long speech in which Mr Ambani praised his twin children for working hard to bring Jio to the masses, the CEO also announced affordable smartphones under the LYF brand which will retail for as low as Rs. 2999.
Reliance Jio is a game-changing new service and is sure to change the face of mobile networks in India. There is no doubt that other networks will rush towards similar tariffs as soon as they can. The population itself will line up for Jio connections because of the free voice calls and extremely affordable data pricing. The quality of services, of course, will only be measurable once people start using the service after its launch on 5th September.
