Orkut, then Facebook… And Now, Say Hello to ‘Hello’ – The Latest Social Networkby Ryan Dsouza August 9, 2016
It all started out with Orkut being the most popular social networking website back then. Unfortunately, the glorious days ended as soon as Facebook made it to the scene. Google had no other option but to shut down. Thanks to the rapidly growing popularity of Mark Zuckerberg’s brainchild.
While Orkut is a part of history, its creator Büyükkökten plans to give it a new breath of life by introducing ‘Hello’ a mobile-only social networking app. Although this may not be a resurrection of Orkut, it is expected to be to be ‘the next generation’ of it.
What’s The Big Deal with ‘Hello’?
Currently, the app is available in the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, Ireland and France. India, Mexico and Germany are next on the list.
Unlike the present-day mainstream social networking websites, ‘Hello’ isn’t about posting the regular status updates. Instead, the app largely focuses on images. All that the app needs is the access to your contacts.
‘Hello’ is primarily designed around ‘Passions’ called ‘Personas’. These can be anything from photography, food, music, etc. You can select up to 5 different ‘Personas’. While you post content, you need to assign it to the related Persona. In case you are no more interested in your selected Personas, you can replace them with the new ones.
The feed is generated based on the ‘Persona’ you select and your location. The app also recommends users based on similar passions. To initiate a conversation, all you need to do is simply tap on ‘Say Hello’. Quite straightforward, isn’t it?
The ‘Hello’ and the ‘Orkut’ Connection
To be honest, the 2 have too little in common apart from the fact that both have been created by Orkut Büyükkökten. Remember Testimonials in Orkut? Well, ‘Hello’ presently doesn’t seem to have a feature on the same lines. We are not quite sure if the app lets you change the default theme, just like Orkut did. Also, you could easily find out who recently visited your Orkut profile. But, does ‘Hello’ notify you about the visits to your profile? We’ll have to try the app to find out.
Can Hello Go Head On With Facebook?
Enjoying a fan-base of more than 1.7 billion users worldwide, Facebook is by far the strongest and currently seems to be unbeatable. The social networking site is all packed up with some cool features, with many new features pouring in every now and then, thereby making it even more widely accepted. Take for instance the Facebook Messenger. If you are not using WhatsApp, you are probably busy chatting on FB Messenger.
Hello is all about bringing people sharing the same passions together, thereby building friendly communities. With over a billion users, Facebook already has a good number of individuals sharing the same passions.
What Makes ‘Hello’ Different?
However, one strong factor that sets ‘Hello’ apart is its simplicity. As discussed earlier, the app is not about posting lengthy status updates, but instead is more of an image-based social network that requires you to do less and convey the message in a much friendlier way.
So, rather than trying to be the top social network, ‘Hello’ will most likely work on creating a user-base revolving around one’s interest and making it last for a longer duration.
