Oppo Find X vs Vivo NEX: The Battle of Full-Screen Smartphones and Pop-up Cameras

by June 24, 2018

Oppo-Finx-X-vs-Vivo-NEXChinese smartphone maker Oppo launched its latest flagship smartphone Find X earlier this week. The highlight of the device is its truly bezel-less display and screen-to-body ratio of 93.8%. There’ s another Chinese handset maker that recently launched a truly bezel-less device and that’s Vivo NEX with screen-to-body ratio of 91.24%. Both Oppo Find X and Vivo NEX feature pop-up camera functionality which enabled the handset makers to achieve such higher screen-to-body ratio. Both Vivo and Oppo have taken a bold step forward by breaking free from the typical notched display design that started with iPhone X and was later adopted by all Android handset makers in their latest flagships. Both the devices are yet to hit the Indian market but there’s a lot of excitement regarding about the two handsets already due to the unique and unconventional design language. Let us compare the two phones in terms of design, display, hardware, camera and other specifications including the price in order to find out which is a better buy.

Oppo Find X vs Vivo NEX: Design

As mentioned earlier, both Oppo Find X and Vivo NEX have an unconventional design language with pop-up camera set up. The Find X has three pop-up cameras including dual camera on the back and a single camera on the front. The entire top section of the phone containing the camera set up pops out from the top frame as soon as the camera app is launched.

Oppo Find X

While the Vivo NEX comes has only a single selfie camera that pops-up from the top once the camera app is launched. But this is just a tab and not an entire chunk of the phone as found in Find X. Both the phones feature front as well as back made up of glass metal frame sandwiched in between the same. The Find X Find X measures 156.7 x 74.2 x 9.4 mm and weighs in at 186 grams, whereas the NEX measures 162 x 77 x 8 mm and weighs about 199 grams. So, the NEX is taller and heavier than the Find X, but it’s also slim in comparison. Surprisingly, none of the phones feature IP certification for water resistance, which is a little disappointing.

Oppo Find X vs Vivo NEX: Display

The Oppo Find X sports a tall 6.59-inch full HD+ Super AMOLED display with 2316 x 1080 pixels resolution and an aspect ratio of 19.3:9 along with pixel density of 388ppi. While the Find X bears a slightly smaller 6.4-inch curved edge-to-edge AMOLED bezel-less display with 2340 x 1080 pixel resolution and 401ppi pixel density. The Oppo Find X offers a better screen-to-body ratio of 93.8% as compared to the Vivo NEX which offers a screen-to-body ratio of 91.24%.

Oppo Find X vs Vivo NEX: OS, Processor and Other Hardware Specifications

The Oppo Find X is powered by a Snapdragon 845 chipset coupled with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of inbuilt storage. It runs Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box with the company’s own Color OS 5.1 interface on top of it. The battery capacity of the device is 3,730mAh which comes with VOOC fast charging support.

The Vivo NEX also packs a Snapdragon 845 chipset along with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. It is shipped with Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box with Vivo’s FunTouch 3.1 interface on top. The battery capacity of the phone is massive at 4,000mAh and it comes with support for fast charging. So, the Vivo NEX seems to score slightly better in terms of power as compared to Find X.

Oppo Find X vs Vivo NEX: Security

For security purpose, the Vivo NEX has an in-display fingerprint scanner but it lacks the face unlock feature, maybe as the selfie camera is tucked inside the body. On the other hand, the Find X lacks the fingerprint sensor, but it features the face unlock in the form of O-Face technology. When you hit the power key, the entire camera set up quickly pops up to scan your face and then unlocks the phone. This raises the question of durability but Oppo claims that they have tested the mechanism for about 300,000 slides and there shouldn’t be any durability worries for at least five years as an average user unlocks the phone about 100-150 times a day. And although you may think that the process is too long, the pop-out mechanism is very quick i.e. the camera set up pops out in just half a second.

Oppo Find X vs Vivo NEX: Camera

In terms of optics, the Find X has a dual rear camera set up 16MP (f/2.0) + 20MP (f/2.0) and a 25MP (f/2.0) front camera for selfies, video calls and face unlock. The Vivo NEX features a dual rear camera set up comprising of 12MP (f/1.8) primary camera and 5MP (f/2.4) secondary camera with support for OIS (optical image stabilization). The front hosts an 8MP (f/2.0) selfie camera. So, the Find X seems to score better in the camera department, at least on paper. However, you may wish to compare the actual performance as that can defer from the on-paper performance.

Oppo Find X vs Vivo NEX: Price and Availability

Both Oppo Find X and Vivo NEX are belong to the premium price segment with Find X being one of the costliest smartphones available in the market.

The Find X is priced at EUR 999 i.e. roughly USD 1155 and INR. 78,700 (for 256GB variant). While the Vivo NEX is priced at CNY 4998 which is roughly $770 and INR 52,100 for the 256GB version, whereas the price of 128GB variant is set at CNY 4498 which is around $700 and INR 46,900.

The Vivo NEX is available only at company’s hometown China at the moment and there’s no word yet on its availability outside of China. The Find X is confirmed to launch in China, India, Australia, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and North America in August 2018.

Overall both Oppo Find X as well as Vivo NEX are packed with performance and feature good specifications along with innovative design. The Vivo NEX scores slightly better in performance and is also priced slightly better as compared to Find X. So, if it makes it outside of China then it is comparatively a better buy.
