Chinese Smartphone brand OnePlus, with the objective to unsettle the premium handset market has already had success in countries such as India. It has come across as a great alternative to flagship phones from Samsung, HTC, and LG. The company wasn’t complacent in any way while enjoying the success it tasted with the OnePlus 5. Instead, it was busy readying to jump on the thin-bezel bandwagon. And today, it took the wraps off the OnePlus 5T at a press event in New York.
The OnePlus 5T cannibalized its predecessor the minimum bezel design at the front with 6-inch Full HD+ AMOLED screen. The display has a tall 18:9 aspect ratio. On the photography front it retains the same 16 MP + 20 MP dual rear camera setup from the OnePlus 5 but wears new lenses with an f/1.7 aperture to capture more light. OnePlus claims that in extremely low light, the 5T will automatically switch to its secondary camera module as it is better equipped to handle the dark. One Plus has added a Face-unlock feature to the phone which would be helpful in scenarios when it is placed down. Oh yes, the fingerprint sensor is now moved on to the rear. Apart from the addition of the fingerprint sensor though, the rear design remains identical to its predecessor.
The smartphone is powered by the flagship-grade Snapdragon 835 chipset. It now gets Bluetooth 5 support, which is augmented with AptX HD support for enhanced wireless audio streaming. Don’t worry, as OnePlus hasn’t killed the 3.5 mm audio jack in the process. The 5T also retains a 3,300 mAh battery with its proprietary Dash charging feature which promises fast charging times. OnePlus failed to bundle the One Plus 5T with Android Oreo. So, you will have to put up with Android Nougat until the company rolls out the software update.
The phone seems like a solid allrounder with a new design. But, things such as wireless charging and water-resistance features are still missing. So, there are a few sore points with the latest “flagship killer”.
The best news for the OnePlus fans is that the 5T is going to available at OnePlus 5’s price. The OnePlus 5T with 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage costs Rs 32,999. The top variant with 8 GB RAM + 128 storage is priced at Rs 37,999. At this point, the company has only announced the Midnight Black colour. The OnePlus 5T will be available in an early access sale on Amazon India and OnePlusStore.in, and OnePlus experience store in Bangalore on November 21. The OnePlus 5T open sale will begin on November 28 2017 in India along with the EU and US market.
Founded by Carl Pei and Pete Lau in 2013, OnePlus is a young company. It is backed by BBK Electronics, which also has stakes in other Chinese smartphone brands such as Oppo and Vivo.
