Nokia 8.1 vs Samsung Galaxy A8s vs Oppo R17 ProRecently HMD Global launched its Nokia 8.1 smartphone in India with a price tag of Rs. 26,999. The phone is a direct successor to the Nokia 7 Plus and features a premium design language along with a PureDisplay screen, Zeiss cameras, Snapdragon 710 SoC and Android 9 Pie operating system out of the box. In terms of features and specs, the Nokia 8.1 competes with the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy A8s and Oppo’s R17 Pro. Today, we’ll compare the three phones on various software and hardware parameters to find a better value for money device.

As mentioned earlier, the Nokia 8.1 features a premium design language with glass-metal-glass combination which is similar to Nokia X7. The shiny metal frame on the sides adds to the premium look and design. The device gets a wide notch on the top of the display and a chin. It also gets a 2.5D Gorilla Glass protection on the front and back. The back features a vertically aligned dual-camera setup and a fingerprint sensor. The company has also included silver accents around the frame, rear camera and fingerprint sensor.

The Samsung Galaxy A8s is one of the trend setters for 2019. It features the modern Infinity-O Display i.e. a hole on the top left edge of the screen for the selfie camera. The entire front portion is taken over by the display, with no bezels on all sides. At the back, there is a vertically stacked triple camera setup along with a centrally placed fingerprint sensor. The power button and volume rocker are placed on the right edge, and the SIM tray is seen on the left edge of the device. At the bottom houses the USB Type-C port, the speaker grille and the microphone.

The Oppo R17 Pro brings a premium gradient design with waterdrop display and a triple rear camera setup. It is a sparkling beauty, thanks to the gradient colours. From the front, the Oppo R17 Pro looks similar to the OnePlus 6T. However, it has subtle differences on the back and on the chassis as the rear camera module is bigger in the R17 Pro due to triple camera set-up.

Design is a matter of choice, but in our opinion although OPPO R17 Pro has striking looks, the Galaxy A8s appears the most modern due to its punch-hole display and bezel-less screen design.

In terms of display, the Nokia 8.1 features a 6.18-inch PureDisplay with an FHD+ (2246×1080) resolution and 18.7:9 aspect ratio. As mentioned earlier, it gets 2.5D Gorilla Glass layer of protection on top. The Galaxy A8s sports a 6.2-inch full-HD+ display with 1080×2340 pixel screen resolution and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. While the Oppo R17 Pro sports a larger 6.4-inch full-HD+ AMOLED display with a 1080×2340 pixel resolution, waterdrop-style notch, Corning Gorilla Glass 6 layer of protection and a 91.5 percent screen-to-body ratio. So, the Oppo R17 Pro is a winner in this department.

In terms of dimensions, the Nokia 8.1 measures 154.8 x 75.76 x 7.97 mm, and weighs in at 178 grams. The Galaxy A8s has dimensions of 149.2 x 70.6 x 8.4 mm and weight of 172 grams, while the Oppo R17 Pro has dimensions of 157.6 x 74.6 x 7.9 mm and it weighs in at 183 grams. So, the Nokia 8.1 is the slimmest and the lightest of the three phones.

The Nokia 8.1 draws power from an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC clocked up to 2.2GHz, coupled with 4GB of LPDDR4x RAM. The inbuilt storage capacity of the device is 64GB which can be expanded up to 400GB via microSD card.

The Galaxy A8s is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 octa-core SoC paired with Adreno 616 GPU, with 6GB and 8GB RAM options. Internal storage capacity of the device is set at 128GB.

The Oppo R17 features an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC to keep things ticking. In terms of memory, it features 8GB of RAM and 128GB of inbuilt storage which is expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB) in a hybrid dual-SIM configuration.

The Nokia 8.1 runs stock Android 9 Pie, and it is part of the Android One programme that is guaranteed to deliver timely updates. The Samsung Galaxy A8s runs on Android 8.1 Oreo OS with Samsung own Experience UI 9.5 on top, while the Oppo R17 Pro runs Colour OS 5.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box.

The Nokia 8.1 is fueled by 3,500mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. It can deliver up to 22 hours of talk time, 24 days of standby time, and up to 11 hours of video playback, as claimed by the company. The Galaxy A8s is backed by a 3,400mAh battery with fast charging support and the Oppo R17 Pro is backed by a 3,700mAh battery with Super VOOC Flash Charge tech. The Oppo R17 is a clear winner in this department.

The Nokia 8.1 bears a dual camera setup on the back with Zeiss optics. It consists of a 12-megapixel primary sensor with dual-LED flash + a secondary 13-megapixel fixed-focus lens meant for depth sensing. The front hosts a 20-megapixel fixed focus selfie camera. The company is highlighting its Bothie feature, which allows both the front and rear camera to used simultaneously.

The Galaxy A8s sports a triple rear camera setup comprising of a 24-megapixel primary sensor with f/1.7 aperture + a 10-megapixel telephoto sensor with f/2.4 aperture + a 5-megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture for depth sensing. For selfies and video calls, there’s a 24-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture.

The Oppo R17 Pro also features a triple rear camera setup consisting of a 12-megapixel sensor with f/1.5 to f/2.4 aperture + a 20-megapixel sensor with an f/2.6 aperture + a third TOF 3D stereo camera that assists in depth effects amongst other things. There’s a 25-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture on the front, which features AI Beauty Camera beautification with a live preview option.

Overall, the Oppo R17 Pro has a better rear as well as front camera set up as compared to the other two devices.

The Nokia 8.1 is priced in India at Rs. 26,999 for its sole 4GB RAM + 64GB inbuilt storage variant, while the Oppo R17 Pro comes with a price tag of Rs. 45,990, for the 8GB RAM + 128GB inbuilt storage variant. Samsung has just announced the Galaxy A8s but has not yet revealed its pricing in any market, but it is expected to be around Rs. 35,000.

The Oppo R17 Pro packs better specs as compared to Nokia 8.1 and Galaxy A8s. It also features an attractive design, but it is a considerably expensive device as compared to Nokia 8.1. So, if you are looking for a value for money deal then you should pick the Nokia 8.1. Otherwise, Oppo R17 Pro is a good option to consider.
