Nokia 2.1 vs Nokia 3.1 vs Nokia 5.1: Price, Features and Specifications ComparedHMD Global, the brand that operates Nokia, is expected to launch Nokia 6.1 Plus and Nokia 5.1 Plus smartphones by the end of this month. But ahead of the launch, the company recently added three new devices to its portfolio dubbed as Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 5.1. The devices are successors to the Nokia 2, Nokia 3 and Nokia 5, which were first launched in May this year. Thus, the new variants are also referred to as Nokia 2 (2018), Nokia 3 (2018) and Nokia 5 (2018). The Nokia 2.1 runs Android 8.1 Oreo (Go edition) operating system out of the box, while the Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 5.1 are shipped with Google’s Android One OS that provides optimised stock Android experience with access to quick updates.

The Nokia 2.1 comes with 5.5-inch HD LCD display with 720×1280 pixel resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. The display also comes with anti-FP coating. The Nokia 3.1 features 5.2-inch HD+ display with 720×1440 pixel resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. It comes with layer of Corning Gorilla Glass for protection against scratches. While, the Nokia 5.1 sports a larger 5.5-inch full-HD+ IPS LCD display with 1080×2160 pixel resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. The display also comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 layer of protection.

In terms of dimensions, the Nokia 2.1 measures 153.7 x 77.7 x 9.35 mm and weighs about 160 grams. The Nokia 3.1 measures 146.25 x 68.65 x 8.7 mm and its weight is about 138 grams. While, the Nokia 5.1 measures 151.1 x 70.73 x 8.27 mm and weighs in at 160 grams.

So, both Nokia 3.1 and 5.1 come with a tall and nearly bezel-less displays. As mentioned earlier, the Nokia 2.1 runs Android Oreo (Go edition) operating system out of the box. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC paired with 1GB of RAM. The battery capacity of the phone is quite impressive at 4,000mAh which promises a backup of 2 days with a single charge.

The Nokia 3.1 runs Android 8.0 Oreo, as part of the Android One programme, out of the box. For those who are unaware, Android One is a hardware and software standard created by Google intended to provide a consistent user experience and improved security through frequent updates. The phone is powered by an octa-core MediaTek MT6750 SoC along with up to 3GB of RAM. It is backed by a 2,990mAh battery.

The Nokia 5.1 is also part of Google’s Android One program and boot Android Oreo out of the box. It is backed by an octa-core MediaTek MT6755S SoC coupled with 3GB of RAM. The battery capacity of the device is slightly higher than Nokia 3.1 i.e. 3,000mAh.

In terms of storage, the Nokia 2.1 comes with 8GB of expandable storage (up to 128GB), while the Nokia 3.1 comes with 32GB storage. The Nokia 5.1 also features 32GB inbuilt storage capacity with an option to expand the same up to 128GB using a microSD card.

In the camera department, the Nokia 2.1 comes equipped with 8-megapixel rear snapper and a 5-megapixel front snapper for selfies and video calls. The Nokia 3.1 is shipped with a 13-megapixel snapper on the rear (f/2.0 aperture, autofocus, an LED flash) and an 8-megapixel snapper (with f/2.0 aperture) on the front. While, the Nokia 5.1 sports a slightly better 16-megapixel primary snapper with PDAF and an LED flash. The front hosts an 8-megapixel secondary snapper.

The Nokia 2.1 is the most affordable of the three phones and it comes in single variant of 1GB RAM, which is priced in India at Rs. 6,999. The color options available for the users are Blue/Copper, Blue/Silver and Grey/Silver.

The Nokia 3.1 3GB RAM is priced at Rs. 11,999 and there are three color options for the buyers- Blue/Copper, Black/Chrome and White/Iron.

While, the Nokia 5.1 is the higher variant of the three and is priced at Rs. 14,999. It will be available in three color options- Copper, Tempered Blue, and Black.

All three phones will go on sale in India from August 12 via major online as well as offline retailers across the country.

Although Nokia has done a good job by bringing in new features to the existing handsets, there are still better handsets available in the budget market segment by Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, which offer quality features and specifications at an affordable price. Xiaomi leads this segment with its aggressive pricing strategy. It will be interesting to see what more Nokia has in store to combat the competition.
