
MWC 2019: LG G8 ThinQ and 5G-ready LG V50 ThinQ Smartphones Launched
South Korean tech giant LG has launched two new flagship smartphones at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 dubbed as LG G8 ThinQ and LG V50 ThinQ. The LG G8 Thinq comes with Quad HD+ OLED Full Vision display and is powered by Qualcomm’s fastest Snapdragon 855 SoC, while the LG V50 ThinQ is company’s first 5G enabled smartphone which is also powered by Snapdragon 855 SoC, but it comes with Snapdragon X50 modem which brings in 5G to the smartphone. The company has announced that it has partnered with 10 major carriers in the markets where 5G service will be launched this year, which includes the US, South Korea, Australia, and some of the key European markets. Unfortunately, LG has not yet announced the pricing and availability details of both the smartphones.
LG G8 ThinQ Features and Specifications
The LG G8 ThinQ sports a 6.1-inch Quad HD+ OLED Full Vision display with 3120 x 1440 pixel screen resolution and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The phone also features crystal sound OLED display technology, which uses the phone’s display as a diaphragm and eliminates the need to have an earpiece in the front. There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor underneath to keep things ticking along with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, which can be expanded further up to 2TB via microSD card. It runs Google’s latest Android 9.0 Pie operating system out of the box and is fueled by 3,500mAh capacity battery with support for Qualcomm’s Quick charge 3.0.
The LG G8 ThinQ is IP68 certified for resistance against dust and water resistant. In addition, it is compliant with STD-MIL 810 military grade standard. The phone bears a triple-camera set up at the back which is horizontally stacked at the center and comprises of a 16MP super-wide lens + a 12MP standard lens + a 12MP telephoto lens. The front gets an 8MP standard lens for selfies with time-of-flight technology for more accurate face unlock feature. In addition, there’s Hand ID biometric recognition feature that uses the phone’s ToF camera and infrared sensors to identify the users’s hand and other details. The phone also features Air Motion which uses hand gestures such as waving in the air to perform common tasks such as answering calls or adjusting volume level.
In terms of audio, the LG G8 ThinQ comes with boombox speakers, 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC, DTS:X 3D surround sound and support for HDR10. In addition, there’s also Master Quality Authenticated technology.
The phone will come in three colour options- Caramine Red, Aurora Black and Moroccan Blue.

LG also launched LG G8s ThinQ which features a 6.2-inch full HD+ OLED display instead of 6.1-inch. There’s a difference in the camera set up as well which comprises of a 13MP super wide angle lens + a 12MP standard + a 12MP telephoto lens. The front gets the same 8MP standard lens with a Z camera. In terms of storage, there are two options available for the buyers- 6GB RAM + 64 GB inbuilt storage and 6GB RAM + 128GB inbuilt storage.
LG V50 ThinQ Features and Specifications
The LG V50 ThinQ gets a larger 6.4-inch Quad HD+ FullVision OLED display (3120 x 1440 pixels) with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and and 538 ppi pixel density. The phone also comes with a Dual Screen accessory that consists of a 6.2-inch Full HD+ Full Vision OLED attachable display that attaches itself to the side of the phone through Pogo Pin connector. It need not be charged separately as it draws power from phone’s battery itself. Under the hood, the device is powered by Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor along with Adreno 640. The RAM is 6GB and inbuilt storage capacity is 128GB, which is expandable up to 2TB via microSD card. It runs Android 9.0 Pie OS and is fueled by 4000mAh with support for Quick Charge 3.0 technology.
For the camera buffs, there’s a triple rear camera module with a combination of 12 MP primary sensor with f/1.5 aperture + 16 MP wide-angle lens with f/1.9 aperture + 12 MP telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture and LED flash. For selfies, there’s a dual camera set up consisting of an 8MP sensor with f/1.9 aperture + 5 MP wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture.
Additional features of the device include Fingerprint Scanner, Face Unlock, IP68 dust and water resistance, Stereo Speakers, Boombox Speaker, Vapor Chamber Cooling etc. In addition, it also features super far field voice recognition technology that enables the Google Assistant to listen to user’s commands even from a distant, similar to the way smart speakers function.
The phone comes in single Astro Black colour option and will be available in select markets such as the US, South Korea, Australia and select European markets later this year.
