MWC 2016 Day 3: Tech Giants Bring Their Best To The Festby Rajshree Faria February 25, 2016
The third day of the Mobile World Congress saw tech giants like Nokia, Huawei, Qualcomm, and Ericsson making some big announcements. Unfortunately, for gadget enthusiasts, these “big” pieces of news of the developments in 5G networks and virtual routers were of no consequence. What WAS of consequence was the unveiling of a few interesting Smartphones. Let’s have a look, shall we?

Don’t have an iPhone but would like one? Well, if you are willing to settle for a similar looking device as the iPhone, and that too the iPhone 6S, you may want to get a better look at the Gionee S8. Losing all pretense of newness is the new Smartphone from the Chinese mobile-maker, incorporating a pressure-sensitive display not unlike the 3D Touch on the iPhone 6S. The 5.5” AMOLED full-HD display supports the feature, but is limited to menus; you may not even have support for the 3D Touch like feature on most apps downloaded from the PlayStore. However, the dual SIM, 4G enabled Marshmallow eating Smartphone supports two WhatsApp accounts! So if you’re looking to have some ‘blue tick’, ‘last seen’ fun with 2 numbers, here’s your chance! To be sold for around Rs.30, 000, the Gionee S8 promises some efficient multitasking with its 1.9GHz MediaTek MT 6755 Helio P10 octa-core processor and 4GB RAM. Camera lovers may not exactly have the iSight camera on the Apple wannabe, but there is a pretty great 16MP rear, and 8MP front camera on the Gionee S8.
Xiaomi Mi 5

Ever wondered what the “mi” in the Chinese brand’s name mean? No? Let me enlighten you then. It stands for ‘Mission Impossible’, and rightly so. In all its gadgets so far, Xiaomi has incorporated the best specs at the most competitive pricing…and the legacy continues with its new flagship, Mi 5. Sporting a 5.15” IPS display with full-HD resolution, the supremely powerful Smartphone boasts of a 2.15GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and 3GB RAM (16GB), or 4GB RAM in the 32GB storage variant. With a 3,000mAh battery, the user can surf the internet on 4G speeds for hours and still have enough phone battery to take videos with the 16MP rear camera, or video call using the 4MP front camera. With a fingerprint sensor embedded in the Home button, security will not be an issue on the phone. The Mi 5 will be made available in the next couple of months for a price of about Rs.25, 000.

Aimed at those looking for a business Smartphone with the Windows experience, the Lumia 650 comes with a pocket- friendly price of Rs.13, 000 (approx). The Smartphone sports a 5” screen with HD resolution. With support for 4G connectivity the user rest assures that downloads will be quick. Microsoft has fitted the Lumia 650 with a decent enough 8MP rear, and 5MP front camera to enable business video conferences using Skype. On the processor front, users get a 1.3 GHz Snapdragon 212 quad-core processor, and 1GB of RAM.

You can store all your business presentations and work related documents on the 16GB of internal space, or even supplement it by another 200GB using the microSD card slot. However, Microsoft seems to have missed a step by not including the extremely useful feature of Continuum, which allows the Windows 10 Smartphone to connect to a big screen for a PC like experience. But you can’t get everything for only Rs.13, 000, can you?
With the grand finale of the Mobile World Congress taking place tomorrow, keep reading to know if the phrase “saving the best for the last” holds true here too!
