Tech giant, Microsoft, has launched a new hybrid model of a laptop-tablet with 10-inch display. The 2-in-1 device is called Surface Go. The device will compete with the Apple iPad which comes with a 9.7-inch display. It was first unveiled in March at a price tag of US$329.

The Microsoft Surface Go will be priced at US$ 399 for its base model. The Surface Go looks like the Surface Pro. It is a mini version of the Pro with subtle differences in appearances. As per the company, the Surface Go is the thinnest Surface device ever. The device weighs 520 grams which is slightly heavy in comparison to the 9.7-inch iPad which packs around 469 grams.

The Surface Go also features an integrated 165-degree kickstand. The device comes with a 10-inch PixelSense touchscreen display. The display offers an aspect ratio of 3:2 and comes with a resolution of 1800 x 1200 pixels. The Surface Go is powered by the Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y processor. The device is available in two variants – 4 GB RAM + 64 GB eMMC and 8 GB RAM + 128 GB SSD. The Surface Go, including all its variants, comes with support for Wi-Fi connectivity.

The battery of the device can last up to 9 hours once fully charged if company’s claims are to be believed. Microsoft also adds that it takes 2 hours to completely charge the battery. The specifications of the battery have not yet been revealed.

The Surface Go comes pre-installed with Windows 10 S which has been specifically designed to run on low-powered devices. Microsoft approved apps such as MS Office, NetFlix, Skype etc. are the only apps that are featured on the Windows 10 S. As it runs apps that are available in the Windows Store only, the risk of downloading malware or viruses is limited. Microsoft has made the provision for Surface Go users to update to full version of Windows 10 for accessing other apps.

The Surface Go features a selfie camera of 5-megapixel for facial recognition. The camera in the back comes with an 8-megapixel sensor. The device comes with connectivity options such as 3.5mm audio jack, microSD card slot, USB-C and Surface Connect for charging as well as for connecting it to the Surface Dock. Microsoft has also confirmed that an LTE advanced version of the Surface Go powered by a Snapdragon X16 LTE modem will be made official later this year.

As for its price, the 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM variant of the Surface Go will be priced at $399 which converts to around Rs. 27,450. The higher variant with 128 GB storage + 8 GB RAM comes with a price tag of $549, which roughly translates to Rs. 37,750. The device is available in colour options such as Burgundy, Cobalt Blue and Platinum.

Multiple regions such as Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, U.K and U.S. are now receiving pre-orders of the Surface Go. The shipment of all these pre-ordered Surface Go devices is expected to begin from August.

The company has not officially communicated as to when the device will be launched in India. As the company has claimed that it will add other markets later in this year, we can expect an India launch toward the end of the year.

Along with the laptop-tablet hybrid – Surface Go, Microsoft is selling a black coloured Type Cover which comes at a price of $99 or roughly Rs. 6,800. It is also offering a Signature Type Cover that comes in colours like blue, black and red and costs $129 which converts to around Rs. 8,900.
