It is the third iteration of the large-screen smartphone or rather phablet from the company. And we must say that it’s a comprehensive update to its predecessor Mi Max 2. The phone doesn’t have a real competition as there are not many phablets made this year. So, let us compare it with Mi Max 2 in order to find out how good an upgrade it is. We’ll discuss all key aspects such as design, display, OS, processor and other configurations along with the price.

One of the major upgrades in Mi Max 3 is in terms of design and display. Similar to Mi Max 2, the Mi Max 3 also boasts of a full-metal body, but it flaunts a taller 6.9-inch HD+ display with a resolution of 2160 × 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. While, the Mi Max 2 sports a 6.44-inch display with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels and a standard 16:9 aspect ratio. The Mi Max 3 has a higher screen-to-body ratio of 79.8 percent as compared to 74 percent of Max 2. The company has achieved to do so by means of trimmed down bezels, especially at the top and bottom.

Both the devices have a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The Mi Max 3 comes in three color variants- Black, Blue and Gold. Whereas the Mi Max 2 comes in two color options- Black and Gold.

The Mi Max 3 has a similar hardware configuration as that of Redmi Note 5 Pro, which makes it one of the powerful devices available in the given price segment. It features an octa-core Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636 processor clocked at 1.8GHz coupled with Adreno 509 GPU for graphics. Whereas the Mi Max 2 is powered by a 2 GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor along with Adreno 506 GPU. Although the Mi Max 3 has a lesser computing power, it is well optimized to deliver better performance as compared to Mi Max 2.

In terms of RAM and storage, the Mi Max 3 is launched in two variants- 4GB RAM + 64GB inbuilt storage and 6GB RAM + 128GB inbuilt storage. The storage can be expanded further up to 256GB using a microSD card. On the other hand, the Mi Max 2 was launched in two storage options- 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and 4GB RAM + 128GB storage.

The Mi Max 3 will run Google’s latest Android Oreo 8.1 operating system along Xiaomi’s custom MIUI 9.5 out of the box. While the Mi Max 2 is shipped with older Android Nougat 7.1 operating system topped with MIUI 8.5. In addition, the Mi Max 3 will soon get an MIUI 10 update which will bring significant improvements to the phone’s output.

One of the key highlights of the Mi Max 2 at the time of launch was its impressive 5,300mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 and parallel charging support i.e. you can continue using the device even while it is being charged. While the Mi Max 3 packs even bigger 5,500mAh battery which also has the Quick Charge 3.0 and parallel charging support. Company claims that Mi Max 3 can deliver up to 474 hours or 20 days of standby time with a single charge.

One of the key improvements of Mi Max 3 comes in the camera department as it hosts a vertically stacked dual rear camera set up of 12MP primary sensor + 5MP secondary sensor as opposed to 12MP single rear camera set up in Mi Max 2. The Max 3 sports an 8MP selfie camera on the front which also doubled up as Face Unlock. While the Max 2 has a 5MP camera on the front for selfies and video calls. All of the sensors in Mi Max 3 is also supported with certain AI-driven features such as AI scene modes and AI face-detection, which makes it a better camera set up as compared to Mi Max 2.

Lat but not the least, let’s look at the difference in pricing of the two devices. The Mi Max 3 is yet to be launched in India but its base variant i.e. 4GB RAM + 64GB storage is priced in China at CNY 1699 which is roughly Rs. 16,900. The top variant of 6GB RAM + 128GB storage is priced at CNY 1999 which is roughly Rs. 19,900. Of course, the actual price in India will not be exactly as converted here but it will be more or less in the same range.

On the other hand, the Mi Max 2 was launched in May last year and its pricing at the time of launch was in the similar range as that of Mi Max 3. Currently, the Mi Max 2 32GB variant comes with a price tag of Rs. 13,999 and 64GB variant comes with a price tag of Rs. 15,999.

The Mi Max 3 is not just another successor, but it is a comprehensive one. It has significant improvements in the hardware configurations as compared to its predecessor Mi Max 2. There is no official word yet on the launch of the device in India, but Mi Mix lineup has a history of making it to Indian market and the same is expected to happen soon with Mi Max 3. So, if you are looking for a phone with large screen, then the device will be definitely worth the wait.
