LG V20 VS Google Pixel

Whoever said that it’s lonely at the top clearly wasn’t referring to the Smartphone market. With more and more flagships launching every fortnight, the battle for the top spot almost always reaches an impasse. With the release of LG’s V20 this week, the battle lines have been drawn: on one end, we have the Google Pixel, the Cupertino-based company’s most ambitious smartphone till date, and on the other end is LG’s V20, the Korean company’s latest attempt at recapturing a sizeable market share.

So, let’s see what exactly these two phones are about and which one triumphs over the other…

Made out of glass & metal, the two high-end Smartphones don’t boast of any special design. ‘Simple’ is what both brands seemed to be aiming for, and ‘simple’ is what they got.

On the screen front, both the phones come with a 2560x1440p resolution display. However, while the Google Pixel sports a 5.5” AMOLED screen, the LG V20 sports a slightly larger 5.7” LCD screen. LG’s larger screen is mainly to accommodate its secondary screen a quick access space for your most frequently used apps. Both phones’ screens are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4, so durability is a common factor for both the phones.

Based solely on the display and design, both the phones rate more or less the same.

In this age of multitasking, a Smartphone isn’t of much use if it can’t run ten apps at a time smoothly. While both, Google Pixel & LG V20 incorporate 4GB of RAM each, the chipset in the former one is marginally better. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, Google Pixel’s apps load 10% faster, CPU speeds are 10% faster than LG V20’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor. Unless, you are extremely picky about your multitasking needs, both the phones perform on the same level here too. Otherwise, Google Pixel is a better choice.

On the storage front, Google Pixel comes in two variants- 32GB or 128GB without any expandable storage, while LG V20 comes with 64GB of internal memory and up to a massive 2TB of expandable memory. Hands down, the LG V20 is the winner here if the lack of adequate phone memory is your primary problem. You can install and save many more apps, pictures, videos, files, etc. on the LG flagship compared to what you could even on a 128GB model of the Google Pixel.

Assuming you will be running apps, using 4G, playing games, surfing the web, and indulging in a lot of multitasking, the battery of the phone is bound to run out soon enough. Hence, the 3450 mAh non-removable battery in Google Pixel XL (Google Pixel has a 2770mAH) is better than the 3200 mAh removable one in LG V20. However, in case you are someone who religiously carries their power bank everywhere they go, the battery shouldn’t be a problem. Again, it’s a tie between the two Smartphones.

Who would’ve thought a day would come when people would simply ditch their digital cameras for a phone? Google Pixel and LG V20 show just why more and more users prefer to double their phone as a camera these days.

In the LG V20, you get not one but two rear cameras. A feature seen in LG’s other premium phone, the G5, the inclusion of a rear dual camera promises to bring out the photographer in you. The main primary camera is 16MP while the secondary rear camera is 8MP with a wider- angle capacity. The front camera on the LG V20 is 5MP with f/1.9 wide-angle.

With the Google Pixel, you get a 12MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera with f/2.4. By the looks of it, LG V20 seems to have better camera specs. If you are looking for a camera phone with spectacular multitasking abilities, then LG V20 is a better bet.

Google Pixel and LG V20 run on the same iteration of Android – Nougat. The first two Smartphones to come with Android Nougat out-of-the-box, Google Pixel has a slight edge over its LG competitor because of its Google UI which is way more flexible and attuned to its user’s needs. Also, since Android is Google’s baby, the user can rest assured that the best of OS updates will be received by the Pixel smartphone. To this end, the Google Pixel might seem like a better choice.

The Google Pixel 32GB variant is priced at Rs. 57, 000 while the 128GB variant costs a little more at Rs. 66, 000. Although the pricing of the LG V20 is not officially revealed yet, the tentative price is Rs. 54, 999.

There is no tortoise or hare in this race for greatness; both phones are great devices in themselves with their own set of unique features. It is wise to get your hands on both the devices for a trial run before you decide which one to buy finally.
