Till date Ubuntu is one of the most popular desktop Linux distributions. It offers a user-friendly environment for your desktop which is why most people prefer it. Others may argue that Unity has performance issues but it takes just a few little tweaks to make it user-friendly. Even if you are pleased with the performance of Ubuntu Unity, you can further enhance it with the Ubuntu Tweak Tool.

  • Installing the Tweak Tool

This tool can easily be installed from the Ubuntu Software Center but you can also access it through a much simpler process. Press the Windows key and use the cursor to go to the Application tab and press Enter. Type in “unity tweak”, navigate to the Unity Tweak Tool and again hit Enter. Once the preview opens, press enter and type in your password. Then you need to simply press enter one last time and wait for the installation to be completed.

While some people prefer web app integration which creates launcher icons for web apps, some might find it annoying as these web apps are nothing but web pages which don’t add anything useful to your desktop. You can easily disable the feature when you click on the launcher section in the Unity Tweak Tool, select Web Apps tab and click the slider to the off position. You will no longer be prompted to install apps in the future.

  • Configure a Hotcorner

Another tweak that puts you at ease is configuring a Hotcorner. With this function all the open windows appear as thumbnails on your screen for easy accessibility. You can easily enable this feature from the Hotcorners section in the Unity Tweak Tool. You will be asked to select the Windows Spread which will either be the bottom or top right.

  • Alignment of the Buttons

For years we have grown accustomed to the close, minimize and maximize buttons on the top right corner of a window, however, Unity seems to place these buttons to the upper left corner. If this is uncomfortable to use, you can change it back to the normal position by clicking on Windows Controls in the Unity Tweak Tool and selecting the right alignment. This section also offers you the option of adding a menu button to your task bar that allows you to control functions like move, minimize, resize etc.

  • Enable the Workspace Switcher

Your Workspace switcher is switched off by default in Unity but you can simply turn it on by clicking the Workspace switcher to the on position on the slider. You should also consider a tweak to the Auto-raise and focus behavior in The Unity Tweak Tool. You can change your settings to have focus drawn on a window by simply hovering over it with your mouse without having to click on it. Select Additional in the Unity Tweak Tool and click the Auto-raise slider to the on position. From the Focus mode select the mouse and choose the Auto-raise delay of your choice.

  • Installing Compiz Config

The Compiz Config Settings Manager is also useful in making minor tweaks to Unity which will speed up its functionality, so go ahead and install it. Once installed, you could disable fading windows as well as animations. While Fading and animation makes Ubuntu attractive, it also slows it down.Boost performance by disabling it.

Another trick is to set the Texture Filter in Compiz Config Settings Manager to fast. This feature is available in OpenGL of the General section. You can monitor all the running applications when you install Preload. To improve battery life, you can optimize your settings with TLP software. Simply install and run the software to improve your power settings. No system is complete without Dropbox, you can easily gain access to all your files on any PC. It takes just minutes to install. Besides Dropbox, there are other free storage softwares like Copy and OneDrive. It’s good to have either one of these softwares installed in your PC.

Unity is quiet efficient but you can make it much better with these minor tweaks. These tips will help your system function much faster and make your desktop environment more efficient. Switch to lighter applications and you can have even an old hardware providing excellent performance. Try these tweaks for smooth functioning of Ubuntu.
