Huawei P20 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S9 PlusHuawei recently launched P20 Pro smartphone in India. The device was priced at Rs. 64,999 which was a bit higher than the expected price. The question is will it be able to survive against the likes of Samsung and Apple who dominate the high price segment due to the brand equity and the after sales service. Let’s compare the Huawei P20 Pro with Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus in order to find out if the price is really justified or not.

Both P20 Pro and Galaxy S9 Plus sport a glass back with metal chassis. Both the phones have thin bezels, but the P20 Pro has an iPhone X like top display notch which is not really liked by many users, but Huawei has gone ahead with the trend to include the same. The notch is absent in Galaxy S9 Plus.

Both the smartphones are water proof. However, the P20 Pro is IP67 certified and the Galaxy S9 Plus is IP68 certified. For those who are unaware, the IP67 certifications means that the phone can service when submerged up to 1 meter in water for up to 30 minutes. While the IP68 certification means the phone can sustain when submerged up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.

In terms of dimensions, the P20 Pro measures 155×73.9×7.8 mm whereas the Galaxy S9 Plus measures 158.1 x 73.8 x 8.5 mm. So, the P20 Pro is slim as compared to Galaxy S9 Plus. In terms of weight, the P20 Pro weighs about 180 grams, while the Galaxy S9 Plus weighs 189 grams. So, the P20 Pro is light in weight as well.

The Galaxy S9 Plus features the 3.5mm audio jack but it is missing in P20 Pro, which may not be liked by many users as it’s cumbersome to carry an extra accessory in order to use the wired headsets with 3.5mm jack.

Those who are a bit choosy in color options, the P20 Pro comes in Black, Midnight Blue, Pink Gold and Twilight colors. While, the Galaxy S9 Plus comes in Midnight Black, Coral Blue, Titanium Grey and Lilac Purple.

The P20 Pro sports a 6.1-inch OLED display with 1080 x 2240 pixel resolution and the Galaxy S9 Plus sports a 6.2-inch Super AMOLED display with 1440 x 2960 pixel resolution. So, the Galaxy S9 Plus has a slightly bigger and brighter display as compared to P20 Pro. The aspect ratio is similar with 18.7:9 for P20 Pro and 18.5:9 for Galaxy S9 Plus. As mentioned earlier, the P20 Pro features a notched display which eats up a bit of the screen space, whereas the S9 Plus features an interrupted display without the notch.

The P20 Pro is powered by an octa-core Kirin 970 chipset with 6GB RAM, whereas the S9 Plus is powered by Snapdragon 845 chipset or an Exynos 9810 paired with 6GB RAM.

The inbuilt storage capacity of the P20 Pro is 128GB, while the standard inbuilt storage capacity of Galaxy S9 Plus is 64GB. Both the phones have an option to expand the storage up to 256GB using a microSD card.

The Galaxy S9 Plus runs Samsung Experience 9.0 over Android 8.1 Oreo and the P20 Pro runs Emotion UI 8.1 over Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box.

The battery capacity of the P20 Pro is better at 4,000mAh as compared to the battery capacity of Galaxy S9 Plus at 3,500mAh. Both the phones support fast charging but Galaxy S9 Plus supports wireless charging as well.

The Huawei P20 Pro’s highlight is its triple rear camera setup which comprises of a 40MP primary sensor with ƒ/1.8 aperture + 20MP monochrome sensor with ƒ/1.6 aperture + 8MP sensor with ƒ/2.4 aperture and 3x telephoto lens. All three sensors have optically stabilized lenses. The triple camera setup works together to capture high quality images with blurred background and record videos in 4K. The front hosts an impressive 24MP selfie sensor.

On the other hand, Galaxy S9 Plus features a dual rear camera setup with 12MP with variable aperture + 12MP with fixed f/2.4 aperture. For selfies, there’s an 8MP camera with autofocus.

So, at least on paper, P20 Pro seems to score more over Galaxy S9 plus i terms of camera.

Overall, both the phones are packed with several high-end features and it’s a bit difficult to pick one purely on the basis of specifications. However, let’s have a look at the pricing which can prove to be a key deciding factor while picking one out of the two.

The P20 Pro is priced at Rs. 64,999 for 6GB RAM + 128GB variant. Whereas, the Galaxy S9 Plus 64GB variant is priced at Rs. 64,900, the 128GB variant is priced at Rs. 68,900 and 256GB variant is priced at Rs. 73,900.

So, the P20 Pro and Galaxy S9 Plus are priced at par with each other. Considering the fact that both the phones are neck-to-neck in terms of features and specifications, will one be willing to pay such hefty price for a less popular brand in comparison to Samsung?
