Honor to Launch Smartphone with In-screen Selfie Camera on January 22: Could be Honor View 20

by December 6, 2018

Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has sent out media invites for a launch event to be held on 22 January at Paris, France. The text of the invite reads as “Save the date. See the Unseen.” The company has not yet revealed the name of the device; however, the invite showcases a teaser outline of the smartphone with rounded corners around the Eiffel Tower and the moon appearing on the top left corner. This confirms that the phone will come with an in-screen selfie camera i.e. the selfie camera will be completely surrounded by the screen, rather than being placed in a notch which cuts into the side of the screen. The device is speculated to be the Honor View 20, a successor to the company’s flagship Honor View 10, which was released in January this year.

This doesn’t come as a surprise as Huawei recently announced the December 17 as launch date of its Nova 4 smartphone which will come with an in-display hole for selfie camera. However, Huawei will not the first brand to launch a phone with selfie camera hole as earlier this week Samsung also announced the launch date of its Galaxy A8s smartphone that will feature a similar in-display camera and will be launched on December 10 i.e. a week prior to Huawei. The other brand to join the league is Lenovo, that will launch its Lenovo Z5s smartphone with in-screen selfie camera. So, we’ve already seen the unseen, unless Honor comes up with some other unique feature.

There is nothing much known yet about the upcoming Honor View 20, but it is expected to be a mid-range phone with Full HD+ display and a screen-to-body ratio of over 92 percent. It is also expected to sport a vertically stacked triple camera setup on the rear just like Huawei P20 Pro and will be powered by Kirin 980 SoC. The phone may also feature an in-display fingerprint sensor and 6GB or 8GB of RAM. If the speculated specifications are believed to be true, then the Honor View 20 could well become one of the powerful mid-range devices in the market. As far as software goes, the phone could be shipped with Android Pie running EMUI 9.0.

This is all we know about the Honor View 20 so far. There is no information on which countries can expect the View 20 to launch but considering that the event venue is outside of China, we can expect it to be a global launch. Keep watching this space for more updates on Honor’s launch event.
