Honor Magic 2 Launched in China

Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has launched its latest smartphone dubbed as Honor Magic 2 at an event held in company’s hometown China. The highlight of the phone is that it features six cameras in total i.e. triple camera set up on the rear and triple pop-up camera set up on the front. It features a mechanically retractable slider similar to Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 (i.e. you will need to use your fingers to slide out the cameras) instead of a using a motor as found in Oppo Find X and Vivo NEX’ sliders. Placing the selfie camera set up in the slider helps the brands to achieve a near bezel-less display providing near 100% screen-to-body ratio. The other common practice followed these days is to include the notch at the top, which is a trend started by iPhone X in 2017. Although this improves the screen-to-body ratio, it still doesn’t help to achieve the desired 100% ratio. Also, the notch is not liked by many as it’s not the most aesthetically pleasing solution. Another highlight of the device is that it comes with AI-based virtual assistant called Yoyo, which the company describes as ‘Heart and Soul’ of the UI and was teased during the launch of Honor Play.

Honor Magic 2 Pricing and Availability Details:

The Honor Magic 2 is priced at CNY 3,799 (approx. Rs. 40,300) for the base variant i.e. 6GB RAM + 128GB inbuilt storage, at CNY 4,299 (approx. Rs. 45,500) for the mid-variant i.e. 8GB RAM + 128GB inbuilt storage and CNY 4,799 (approx. Rs. 50,000) for the top variant i.e. 8GB RAM + 256GB inbuilt storage.

Pre-orders for the phone have already started and the sale will begin from November 6 via the company’s VMall e-commerce site. It will be available in three gradient colour options i.e. Blue, Red and Black.

Honor Magic 2 Launched in ChinaHonor Magic 2 Software and Hardware Configuration:

Honor Magic 2 sports a 6.39-inch full-HD+ AMOLED display 1080×2340 pixel resolution, 403 ppi pixel density and 19.5:9 aspect ratio resulting into 91.5 percent screen-to-body ratio. The phone runs Magic UI 2.0 based Android 9.0 Pie operating system out of the box. However, the first few models will run EMUI 9.0 and will receive an update later on. Under the hood, the phone is powered by HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC along with 6GB or 8GB of RAM. There are two options in terms of onboard storage- 128GB and 256GB. The phone is IPX2 rated for protection against dust and water. All of this is backed by a 3,400mAh battery with 40W super charging technology which can reach 50 percent of charge in just 15 minutes as claimed by the company.

For the camera buffs there’s a triple camera setup on the rear as well as front. The rear camera set up is vertically stacked and placed at the top left corner. It comprises of a 16-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture + a 24-megapixel monochrome sensor with an f/1.8 aperture + a 16-megapixel third sensor with a super wide-angle lens and an f/2.2 aperture. The rear camera set up has AIS technology for image stabilization and features a single-LED flash. While the front hosts triple camera set up consisting of 16-megapixel primary sensor with an f/2.0 aperture + a 2-megapixel secondary sensor + 2-megapixel third sensor with an f/2.4 aperture. The front camera set up also features 3D Face Unlock. The phone also features an in-display fingerprint scanner for security purpose. • 5 percent screen-to-body ratio
  • Magic UI 2.0 based Android 9.0 OS
  • HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC
  • 6GB or 8GB of RAM
  • 128GB or 256GB of onboard storage
  • 3,400mAh battery capacity
  • 16MP + 24MP + 16MP triple rear camera

The phone lacks the 3.5mm headphone jack though, so you’ll need to carry an extra accessory in case you wish to use the same. Thankfully, a USB Type-C to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter comes as part of the accessories included in the box. In terms of dimensions, the device measures 157.32×75.13×8.3 mm and weighs in at 206 grams.

The company also announced two new accessories named the Honor Watch Magic smartwatch and the wireless Honor FlyPods Pro earbuds during the event.

Overall the Magic 2 comes across as a decent mid-range phone with good set up of features and specifications, especially from camera and security point of view. The slider camera set up has helped the brand to achieve a higher screen-to-body ratio and this could be a trend which we’ll get to see more in 2019 taking over from the controversial notch. Lenovo is expected to follow the same path with its Z5 Pro smartphone scheduled to launch later today. The only fear with slider is the durability and we hope the brands will take upmost care to tackle the issue. e.g. During the launch of Oppo Find X, Oppo claimed that the company has tested the sliding mechanism for over 300,000 slides. So, the slider can easily remain in a proper condition for over 5 years which is more than the average life of a smartphone nowadays.

There is no word yet on the availability of the Honor Magic 2 in global markets outside of China. Not sure if the phone will make it to the Indian market or not. Keep watching this space for more updates.
