Honor Magic 2 vs Lenovo Z5 Pro vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 3: The Battle of Slider Phones

by November 5, 2018

Honor Magic 2 vs Lenovo Z5 Pro vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 3The 2018 was about notched display smartphones and the 2019 seems to be set for all-screen smartphones. The trend of notched display was started by Apple by launching its flagship iPhone X in September 2017. The notch typically houses the selfie camera along with the other sensors and helps the smartphone makers to achieve a higher screen-to-body ratio. However, the notch is not liked by all and it still doesn’t help to achieve near 100 percent screen-to-body ratio even after reducing the width of the notch by means of a unique water drop design. So, now the smartphone manufacturers seem to be moving towards phones with slider mechanism in which the slider houses the selfie camera along with the other necessary sensors, thereby enabling them to achieve a near 100 percent (but not 100 percent) screen-to-body ratio.

Earlier, Oppo launched its Oppo Find X with motorized slider and recently some other Chinese players have tried their hand at the same. Honor launched its Magic 2 smartphone last week and Lenovo launched its Z5 Pro smartphone with slider mechanism the same day. While, the market leader Xiaomi launched its Mi Mix 3 slider phone last month i.e. October. The common thing between the three phones is that they all feature a manual slider instead of a motorized one as found in Oppo Find X. Today we’ll compare the Honor Magic 2 with Lenovo Z5 Pro and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 to find out which one wins this battle of slider phones by providing a higher value for customer’s money.

The comparison will be bases on several software as well as hardware configurations including Design and Display, Processor and RAM, OS, Battery and Camera. We’ll also compare the pricing of the three devices as it plays a crucial role in the decision making.

Honor Magic 2 vs Lenovo Z5 Pro vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 3: Design and Display

In terms of design, all three phones feature a manual slider and a glass back and thus they look more or less the same. Anyways the design is a matter of choice, so we’ll leave it up to you to decide based on your preference.

In terms of display, the Honor Magic 2 sports a 6.39-inch AMOLED display which offers a screen resolution of 2140×1080 pixels and aspect ratio of 19.5:9 aspect ratio which results into a screen-to-body ratio of 91.5 per cent.

The Mi Mix 3 sports a similar 6.3-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with 1080×2340 pixel resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a slightly better 93.4 per cent screen-to-body ratio.

However, the Lenovo Z5 Pro wins the battle of display here as it flaunts a same 6.39-inch Super AMOLED display (which is said to be developed by Samsung) along with Full HD+ resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 resulting into highest screen-to-body ratio of 95.06 per cent.

In terms of dimensions, the Honor Magic 2 measures 157.32 × 75.13 × 8.3 mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs in at 206 grams. The Lenovo Z5 Pro 155.12 × 73.04 × 9.3 mm and weighs 210 grams. While, the Mi Mix 3 measures 157.89 x 74.69 x 8.46 and weighs about 218 grams. So, the Honor Magic 2 is the slimmest and lightest of the three devices.

Honor Magic 2 vs Lenovo Z5 Pro vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 3: Processor and RAM

The Honor Magic 2 is powered by HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC along with Mali-G76 MP10 and 6GB or 8GB of RAM. There are two options in terms of inbuilt storage- 128GB and 256GB. However, there is no option to expand the storage via external memory card.

Under the hood, Lenovo Z5 Pro is powered by Qualcomm’s recently announced Snapdragon 710, making it Lenovo’s first smartphone to feature the same. In terms of storage the phone features 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of onboard storage. Again, there’s no option to expand the storage externally.

The Mi Mix 3 draws power from an octa-core Snapdragon 845 chipset along with three RAM options- 6GB, 8GB and 10GB. The inbuilt storage options are 128GB and 256GB.

You may feel that with 10GB of RAM, Mi Mix 3 is a clear winner here but that’s not true as the other two devices also perform equally good and thus all three are almost at par with each other.

Honor Magic 2 vs Lenovo Z5 Pro vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 3: OS and Battery

In terms of software the Lenovo Z5 Pro is shipped with Android Oreo-based ZUI 10.0 operating system. Whereas the Honor Magic 2 and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 run Google’s latest Android 9.0 Pie OS based on Magic UI 2.0 and MIUI 10 respectively.

In terms of battery, the Honor Magic 2 packs a 3,500mAh battery with support for fast charging, while the Lenovo Z5 Pro is backed by a 3,350mAh battery with fast charging support. On the other hand, the Mi Mix 3 is fueled by a 3,200mAh battery with fast as well as wireless charging support. Again, there is no clear winner in this department as there is not much difference in the battery capacity.

Honor Magic 2 vs Lenovo Z5 Pro vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 3: Camera

Things are very interesting in the camera department of all three phones as all of them feature more than the usual no. of 3 cameras (front + back). The Lenovo Z5 Pro and Mi Mix 3 come with 4 cameras while the Magic 2 comes with an impressive 6 no. of cameras. Let’s talk about the specifications of the camera module.

The Lenovo Z5 Pro has a vertically stacked dual camera set up on the rear which consists of a primary camera of 24-megapixel Sony IMX576 sensor + a secondary Sony IMX519 sensor of 16-megapixel. It features f/1.8 aperture lens, autofocus and dual-tone LED flash. The front also hosts a dual camera module comprising of primary 16-megapixel sensor + a secondary 8-megapixel sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. The front camera module features AI beauty mode and also supports IR face recognition which helps to unlock the phone even in low lighting conditions.

The Mi Mix 3 sports a vertically stacked dual rear camera module which is placed at the top left corner and comprises of 12-megapixel primary camera with f/1.8 aperture and a 12-megapixel secondary camera with f/2.4 aperture. On the front, there’s a 24-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel secondary camera for selfies and video calls.

The Magic 2 features a triple rear camera module on the rear as well as on the back. The rear camera set up is stacked vertically and placed at the top left corner. It comprises of 16-megapixel RGB lens with f/1.8 aperture + a 24-megapixel Monochrome lens of f/1.8 aperture + a 16-megapixel super wide-angle camera with f/2.2 aperture. The rear camera set up features scene recognition, HDR wide-angle photography in Night mode, AR mode and 3D portrait mode. The front boasts a 16-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture, alongside a pair of 2-megapixel depth-sensing lenses with f/2.4 aperture.

At least on paper, the Honor Magic 2 seems to have an edge in the camera department over its counterparts. However, we would still advice you to refer some user reviews before you zero down on one option based on the camera output.
