Highly Compatible HTC RE Camera – Innovation at its bestby Abhishek P November 7, 2014 0 comments
By offering smartphone compatible Re camera as an add-on, HTC has scored high on its dynamism quotient. Yes, if you were expecting a continuation in the existing phone series than this would definitely be a pleasant surprise for you.
Well thought of and designed with great acumen, the Re camera can easily be fitted on to its range of Android smartphones and even iOS phones and can take quick photos and even videos. Ideally suitable for clicking normal pictures and videos, this camera is for amateur users.
From the looks of it, one can say it’s a minimalist with two buttons – one in the front and the other in the rear along with some LED indicator lights, that’s it!! Over and above that the RE is not equipped with a viewfinder or display screen or user interface for graphics. With various reviews coming forward of the Re camera, some describing its look as weird or a smoker’s pipe or a asthma inhaler turned upside down and even to the extent of a miniature periscope, the Re camera fits perfectly in hand and is comfortable to use.
Don’t get a shock when you find the power button absent on it. The camera turns on the moment you handle it. Operate it with a shutter button which you will find below your thumb with a single press and opt for a long press for recording a video.
Slow-Motion Video Recording
For recording slow motion video, the front button has to be used. The LED lights will blink in red to indicate the video recording process while if they blink in blue, the video is being recording in slow motion.
You can shoot slow motion videos at 1080p HD video at 30 frames or 720p videos at 120 frames per second. It is equipped with 146 degree ultra wide angle with a fixed-focus lens with a 16 megapixel sensor placed behind it.
Underwater Video Recording
Yet another plus point, the camera can be used underwater for nearly 30 minutes up to a metre of being immersed in water
Battery, Storage and Connectivity
Equipped with a 820mAh battery, the Re camera can shoot up to 1200 images or at least 1 hour 40 minutes of video at 1080p before it requires a recharge.
Available storage on the camera is through an 8GB micros SD card while it can accommodate cards up to 128 GB capacity. In the future, HTC is planning to offer cloud storage through its App.
For ease in sharing images and videos, you can transfer them through the HTC App and Wi-Fi or set up time lapses with the phone functioning as a view finder. At the same time, you can expect the camera to get connected with YouTube for live streaming the videos.
Rather than just introducing the camera, HTC has plans to offer a water proof case along with a handle bar mount to be placed on bikes.
Price and Availability
Priced at $199, the Re Camera will be initially launched in the US market around the time of the holiday season. Re Camera is offered in white, teal, blue and orange colour options.
Having promoting the Re Camera as add on accessory to mobile phones offering amateur quality images and videos, most reviewers have compared it with the well established GoPro cameras which come in the bracket of lightweight and compact HD personal cameras.
On the other side, HTC has been promised many improvisations in the camera by the time it is offered across the markets for inst. faster image taking/recording capacity, live streaming through YouTube and more
Guess we have to wait and watch till it is formally launched and how well it is received in the US markets in the initial stages. Yes, some found the Re Camera a pricey affair at almost $199 for a product which has to be bought over and above the mobile phone. Meanwhile, Xiaomi is planning to introduce its own camera at around $163, a marked price difference, isn’t it?
