Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL have been announced at the company’s I/O 2019 keynote address. The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL smartphones will be more cost-effective offering from Pixel to enable Google to compete more efficiently in the premium smartphone market space. Google has struggled in the sale of its smartphones in the segment. The Pixel 3a and 3a XL are positioned to compete with similar mid-range premium segment phones from Samsung and Apple. The Pixel 3a series smartphones offer Pixel-specific apps and services. These include Google’s popular photography software on cheaper hardware as against the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL flagships that were being launched the year before.

Google Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL price in India

The Google Pixel 3a will be available in India at a price tag of Rs. 39,999, while the Google Pixel 3a XL will be available in India at a price of Rs. 44,999. The smartphones will be offered in only the 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage variant. The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL will be released on May 15th this year. The smartphones have already gone up for registration from 12:30pm IST on May 8 via Flipkart.

The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL by Google has been launched in three colour variants namely Clearly White, Just Black, and Purplish. However, only the first two colour variants will be made available in India. All buyers in India will receive a free 3-month YouTube Music Premium subscription provided they activate the Pixel 3a smartphone before September 30.

In the US, the Pixel 3a price starts at $399, which roughly converts to around Rs. 28,000 while the Pixel 3a XL price starts at $479 which will come close to Rs. 33,500. The other countries across the globe where the newest Pixel smartphones will be available include Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, and the UK.

Google Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL specifications

For this series of smartphones, Google had used hardware more commonly found in the budget segment of smartphones. The company has also chosen to get rid of custom Pixel hardware such as the Pixel Visual Core that is was offering on the flagship Pixel 3 for ₹ 56,690 and Pixel 3 XL for ₹ 56,964. However, Google has retained the Titan M security chip. The single-SIM Nano smartphones and dual-SIM will be available on the Pixel 3a duo in India with an eSIM featuring support from Airtel and Reliance Jio. As per the company, the same support would be extended for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.

Both the Pixel smartphones are supported by the latest version of Android 9.0 Pie. It will get a minimum 3 years of OS and security updates. The phones will also support Google’s AR Core framework for augmented reality applications.

The smartphones are powered by the Snapdragon 670 SoC (two cores clocked at 2GHz and six cores clocked at 1.7GHz) which were unveiled by Qualcomm last year. The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL offer a maximum of 4GB of LPDDR4x RAM, and 64GB of storage. While the Pixel 3a sports a 5.6-inch full-HD+ gOLED display screen with resolution of 1080×2220 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18.5:9, the Pixel 3a XL sports a 6-inch full-HD+ gOLED display with a 1080×2160 pixels resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio, both protected by Dragon Trail glass. It offers a 24-bit colour depth and comes with 16 million colours. The phones feature a polycarbonate unibody design which is very different from the glass seen on the Pixel 3 series.

Google Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL camera features

Both the Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL sport a single 12.2-megapixel Dual-Pixel Sony IMX363 sensor on the back. The sensors are complete with optical and electronic image stabilisation (OIS + EIS), an f/1.8 aperture, 76-degree field of view, 1/2.55-inch sensor, and 1.4-micron pixels. The company has retained a single camera setup as seen on the Pixel 3 flagships. Both the Pixel smartphones that have been launched offer Night Sight low-light photography feature. The company also offers HDR+, Portrait Mode, Super Res Zoom, and Top Shot. The rear camera of the phones are capable of 120fps video recording at 1080p, 240fps at 720p, and 30fps at 4K.

For the selfie camera, Google has used an 8-megapixel sensor with 1.12-micron pixels, an f/2.0 aperture, and an 84-degree field of view. Google has also chosen to use stereo speakers on the Pixel 3a duo. The various sensors that the smartphones pack in include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, and a proximity sensor. A Pixel Imprint fingerprint sensor is placed on the rear panel. An Active Edge sensor is also present on both the smartphones -the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.

The Pixel 3a is equipped with a 3,000mAh battery that can deliver up to 12 hours of video playback time. The Pixel 3a XL bears a 3,700mAh battery which can deliver up to 14 hours of video playback time. The company is also providing an 18-watt charger that can deliver up to 7 hours of battery life in a 15-minute charge. This is in addition to the smartphones themselves being capable of delivering up to 30 hours on a full charge. The smartphone offers a plethora of connectivity options including 4G VoLTE, Wi-FI 802.11ac, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, NFC, a 3.5mm headphone jack on top.

The Pixel 3a measures 151.3×70.1×8.2mm. It weighs 147 grams. The Pixel 3a XL measures 160.1×76.1×8.2mm and weighs 167 grams.
