Facebook, the social networking giant, has updated its Messenger Lite application on Android. The new update will enable content sharing options as well as the use of GIF search. Facebook confirmed this in a blog post. However, the social networking site also confirmed that the total file size that the Messenger Lite can accommodate still does not exceed 10MB.

The updated version of the Messenger Lite app has enabled Facebook to allow its users to share files, audio, video clips and pictures with friends and family. This can be done through the ‘+’ sign that appears to the left of the text box on a chat window. Once the content is selected, it can just be posted on to the chat using the “Send” button.

The new Facebook Messenger Lite app also enables users with animated GIF sharing. The Messenger Lite uses the Tenor GIF library to offer mood-specific GIFs. The users need to use third-party keyboards, such as the Google keyboard, or search for GIFs from their smartphone library. The Messenger Lite will also enable users to change chat settings. This includes changing background colours and using theme-based emojis. Group chats could also be modified on the basis of colour while their names could also feature emojis on occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries etc.

The stripped-down version of Facebook Messenger is especially helpful for users with phones that have less than 1GB RAM or with a slow internet connection. The app is very light and comes with a file size of 6.3MB on Play Store. The app has crossed over 100 million downloads already.
