Your Tattoo Will Soon Be Able To Control Your Smartphone and Your Computerby Ryan Dsouza August 16, 2016
You can now look cool and geeky at the same time. Well, at least that’s was these tattoos intend to do. Microsoft Research along with MIT recently unveiled the ‘DuoSkin’ a temporary metallic tattoo that can be used to control your phone, computer and other devices.
The idea is to create a desirable interface directly on the skin. The tattoos use gold leaf layers, the ones that are traditionally used for coating frames, and even chocolates. They are skin-friendly, cheap and robust.
DuoSkin is divided into three different classes; each class meant for a particular purpose. Let’s have a look at each of them:
1st Class – Input Device
The tattoo lets you turn a part of your skin as a trackpad using which you can control your device. For instance, you can create control buttons for your music player right onto your wrist. Move to the next track or the previous by just tapping on the ‘next’ or the ‘previous’ icon on your wrist without pulling out the player from your pocket.
2nd Class – Out Displays
This tattoo can change colours based on your body temperature, for example, a fire tattoo, just like the one shown in the image above, will light up to show your emotion.
3rd Class – Communication Device
These are NFC-enabled tattoos that can read data directly off your skin. Initiate a communication by simply tapping your smartphone onto the tattoo. Embedding LEDs can further enhance the aesthetics of these tattoos.
What’s the point?
A temporary tattoo is of course not a new thing. They have been around for quite a while now. Presently, glossy-looking ones seem to be the more popular among women who prefer putting them on during special occasions. So, in terms of appurtenances, the DuoSkin tattoos look quite similar but come with an added geeky-touch. In easy words, these tattoos can add up to your style while turning you into a geek.
How Accessible are these?
Like discussed earlier, the tattoo is made out of gold metal leaf layers which are highly affordable. Above all, creating one is very simple. All you need is a simple graphic design software program to design the circuit. The final design is then cut on a tattoo paper with the gold metal leaf layer added onto it. This tattoo can be applied on the skin just like you apply the conventional temporary tattoos.
What Does The Future Hold?
On-skin electronics will no longer be a dream. In fact, the innovation will change the way we have been interacting with each other, thereby reducing the amount of complexity currently involved in setting up digital communications.
The innovation is currently in its initial stages and may undergo a few polishing levels until the final product is perfect without bugs. So, you’ll have to wait for a while. In future, don’t be surprised if you come out of a tattoo parlour with one of these tattoos printed on your arm.
