There is nothing better than reading a book on a lazy Sunday afternoon but keep away from heavy reading during a holiday and switch to something a lot more fun. A good book helps you escape from the cares of your world and step into the world created by the author and that’s just what Rachel Renee Russell manages to do with her popular series of book titled Dork Diaries.
Published by Aladdin Paperbacks, it is one of those books that will make you laugh and will entertain you with illustrations and doodles. It has an appearance much like that of a comic strip except that it has an actual story. The so called “dork” in the book is a 14 year old girl named Nikki Maxwell. The book is her personal diary where she records her daily struggle in middle school. The book is inspired by the authors own life experiences in middle school. She also gets a lot of new inspiration from her own daughters who also help in composing the many illustrations in the book.
The attention this book gets will surprise you. It has already been translated into 28 languages and sold across 32 different countries. The very first book was released back in 2009 titled Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life. It told the tale of Nikki Maxwell’s disapproval to the arrangements made by her father to send her to Westchester Country Day on a scholarship. The book describes her struggle to fit in among the rich crowd, especially MacKenzie Hollister who being the most popular girl in school makes Nikki’s life hell and labels her as a dork. To make matters worse Nikki would have to compete with MacKenzie at the art show in school.
The follow up to that book was titled Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not-So-Popular Party Girl which was release in 2010. Like most teenagers Nikki is crushing on a boy named Brandon Roberts and is disappointed when she hears her nemesis MacKenzie brag about going to the Halloween dance with him. She agrees to be a member of the clean-up committee at the dance and also help out for another Halloween party for her sister. It is only then that Brandon surprises her by asking her out for the dance and she realized that her nemesis made the whole story up. She gets her partner for the dance but she also has to complete the other task she signed up for.
