Compare Vivo V9 vs Redmi Note 5 Pro: Pricing, Design, Camera and Specifications

by March 25, 2018

Vivo V9 vs Redmi Note 5 ProVivo V9, the successor of last year’s Vivo V7, is finally launched in India on March 23. The phone carries design language like iPhone X i.e. notch at the top of the display, vertically stacked dual camera on the rear side etc. So, if you are looking for a device that looks like iPhone but at a lower cost then Vivo V9 is a good option to consider. However, there’s another device in the market which can give Vivo V9 a run for its money and that’s Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. Let’s compare the two phones in terms of Pricing, Design, Specifications and Features.

Vivo V9 vs Redmi Note 5 Pro: Pricing and Availability

There’s only one variant of Vivo V9 i.e. 4GB RAM + 64GB Internal Storage and it is priced at Rs. 22,990 and it will be available in retail stores from 2nd April 2018. The pre-order will start on Amazon, Flipkart, Paytm and Vivo’s official eStore with a cashback offer of Rs. 2000 and one-time screen replacement for the orders placed before 2nd April 2018.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro comes in two variants. The base variant, 4GB RAM + 64GB Internal Storage, comes with a price tag of Rs. 13,999 and the top variant, 6GB RAM + 64GB Internal Storage, is priced at Rs. 16,999.

So, there’s a significant difference of about Rs. 9000 which gives Redmi Note 5 Pro a clear upper hand especially as majority of Indian consumers are price sensitive. However, one needs to consider that currently the Redmi Note 5 Pro is available only on and with limited availability via flash sale. So, it’s not that easy to get your hands on the device and you need a bit of luck along with the money.

Vivo V9 vs Redmi Note 5 Pro: Design

As mentioned earlier, in terms of design the Vivo V9 tries to be an iPhone X clone with a notch at the top of the display and vertically placed dual camera at the back. The fingerprint sensor is placed on the back though. There are some other Android devices copying the iPhone X like notch and Vivo V9 is the first Android handset in India to do so. However, the body is made of shiny plastic which catches fingerprints quite easily and thus it doesn’t match the charm of iPhone X. It sports a 6.3-inch LCD display with 1080×2280 pixel resolution, 19:9 aspect ratio and runs thin bezels around the display especially the chin being the most noticeable. Colour options on Vivo V9 include- Champagne Gold, Sapphire Blue and Pearl Black.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro is not an iPhone X clone, so there’s no notch at the top of display. It runs thin bezels that are evenly narrow on top as well as bottom which gives it a more uniform look. The device sports 5.99-inch FHD+ display with 1080×2160 pixel resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. There’s a vertically stacked dual camera at the rear along with fingerprint sensor but the body is primarily made of metal unlike the Vivo V9 body which is made of plastic. The rear also features a fingerprint sensor. The colour options available with Redmi Note 5 Pro are Black, Gold, Lake Blue, and Rose Gold.

Vivo V9 vs Redmi Note 5 Pro: Dimensions and Weight

Vivo V9 has dimensions of 154.6 mm X 75.03 mm x 7.89 mm and is light at 150 grams making it comfortable to hold.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro measures 158.6 mm x 75.4 mm x 8 mm and weighs 181 grams which is slightly heavier as compared to Vivo V9.

Vivo V9 vs Redmi Note 5 Pro: Specifications

Vivo V9 is powered by octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 processor clocked at 2.2GHz along with 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM which can be expanded up to 256 GB via microSD card. The device runs Android 8.1 Oreo-based Funtouch OS 4.0 out-of-the box and is backed by a 3,260mAh battery.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, is powered by a 1.8GHz octa-core Snapdragon 636 processor (which is more powerful than the one powering Vivo V9) coupled with 4GB/6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage which can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD card. The device ships Android 7.1.2 Nougat instead of Oreo and is backed by impressive 4,000mAh battery with QuickCharge 2.0.

Vivo V9 vs Redmi Note 5 Pro: Camera

The Vivo V9’s main dual camera setup consists of a 16MP primary sensor with f/2.0 + a 5MP secondary sensor with LED flash and phase detection autofocus. For selfies, there’s an impressive 24MP snapper at the front with screen flash and AI-backed beauty mode along with AR stickers. This also doubles up as a security feature with Face Access 2.0 which supports raise-to-wake feature along with app unlock function that enables you to unlock various apps using Face Access. The AI Face access technology identifies unauthorized access attempts by detecting light-reflected surfaces and subtle facial movements. This helps to prevent attempts of unlocking the phone using a photo or video.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro features dual camera setup as 12MP primary sensor with f/2.2 aperture and 5MP secondary sensor with f/2.0 aperture. For selfies, there’s a 20MP camera with LED flash. The phone has recently received an update to bring the face unlock feature on it.

So, the Vivo V9 scores more on the camera front as compared to Redmi Note 5 Pro (at least on paper).

Which phone is better out of Vivo V9 and Redmi Note 5 Pro:

The Vivo V9 is iPhone X lookalike, so if you are looking for an iPhone X like design but have a limited budget then surely Vivo V9 is an option worth considering as it is priced only at Rs. 22,990 (almost 5 times cheaper than iPhone X). But one also needs to consider that the Redmi Note 5 Pro is Rs. 9000 cheaper than the Vivo V9.

If you are a camera buff, then Vivo V9 scores more than Redmi Note 5 Pro on paper. However, we’ve seen in the past that the on-paper camera performance may be differ from the actual. So, one needs to refer to user reviews before taking a call here.

In terms of performance, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is a powerhouse with powerful processor as well as battery.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro is also quite popular which is evident from the way it gets sold out in seconds during the flash sales. One needs to wait and watch the response that Vivo V9 is able to garner once it goes on sale.

Our verdict is that the Redmi Note 5 Pro scores slightly higher as compared to the Vivo V9 considering the price and performance factors.
