BlackBerry has launched the successor to its smartphone KeyOne which was announced last year. The new smartphone named BlackBerry KEY2 has been launched in India for Rs. 42,990. It is an Android powered phone that will be equipped with a physical QWERTY keyboard. The BlackBerry KEY2 is the first smartphone from the BlackBerry stable to have a dual camera. The smartphone will be locally manufactured in India, just like its more popular competitors such as Samsung and Xiaomi.

The BlackBerry KEY2 will be manufactured by Optiemus Infracom, the official licensee for BlackBerry devices in India. The smartphone will be manufactured at its facility at Noida.

The BlackBerry KEY 2 is crafted using the Series 7 aluminium frame for added durability. The smartphone has a diamond pattern soft touch back. The BlackBerry KEY2 packs in a redesigned intelligent keyboard along with a 4.5-inch touch display. The smartphone is equipped with 1620 x 1080 IPS LCD protection and comes with a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass.

The smartphone will run Android 8.1 Oreo operating system. It comes with a Speed Key, a universal short-cut for accessing apps, contacts and the most popular and recently used common functions instantly.

To enable its users to type accurately, the smartphone is said to have increased the height of the physical keyboard by around 20 per cent. The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor, paired with 6GB of RAM. The device comes with 64GB of internal storage. The internal storage is expandable up to 256GB. The BlackBerry KEY2 is powered by a 3500mAh battery. It supports QC 3.0 chargers.

The BlackBerry KEY2, the first dual camera from the BlackBerry stable, features two 12-megapixel cameras, with one having aperture f/1.8 and the other aperture f/2.6 for faster autofocus and Portrait Mode. The selfie camera of the smartphone is an 8-megapixel front camera with fixed focus and selfie flash using LCD.

The BlackBerry KEY2 includes BlackBerry’s proprietary technique for establishing a hardware root of trust adding security keys to the processor. It is a welcome and enhanced focus on security considering that there is a lot of emphasis on data security and integrity all around the world. The smartphone comes preloaded with DTEK by BlackBerry application with ‘at a glance’ security meter. It shows the overall security rating of the device and gives access to manage permissions for applications.

The smartphone includes the Proactive Health check feature. This enables users to scan the device themselves and receive instant feedback on the possible vulnerabilities and the measures that would help them to enhance security. The Locker feature of the phone has been improved to facilitate even greater personal privacy and control over the content. It includes features like private folders for documents and photos and Firefox Focus, the privacy browser by Mozilla. As the pre-loaded privacy application can only be accessed with the fingerprint or password, it enables to safeguard sensitive user data, apps and content such as photos and downloaded files. BlackBerry KEY2 supports Android zero-touch enrollment, thus making it a good choice for seamless implementation and management of corporate-owned mobile devices, especially for large companies.

Hardip Singh, Executive Director, Optiemus Infracom Ltd., says, “In the wake of current data breaches across the globe and here in India, consumers are increasingly concerned about the safety of their information, especially on mobile. The BlackBerry KEY2 is an answer to that!  It not only comes loaded with the best security and privacy enhancement features, but also ensures accuracy and comfortable typing on an intelligent keyboard. The smartphone also offers the best multitasking experience for those that want to get things done.
