BlackBerry KEY2 To Launch On June 7 In New York

BlackBerry is all set to launch BlackBerry KEY2 at an event in New York on 7th of June. The launch of the smartphone follows the launch of BlackBerry KEYone, its premium Android handset with its renowned QWERTY keypad.

The BlackBerry KEY2 will succeed KEYone and as per its Twitter post, the company will host a launch event of 7th June at 10 am EST (that is around 1930 hours IST) in New York to officially launch its latest smartphone. The company has posted this on its Twitter handle with the phrase “An Icon Reborn”. The invites for the event have been sent out.

While not much is yet known about the features that BlackBerry KEY2 will offer, it will carry its signature physical keyboard in all likelihood.

BlackBerry Mobile President Alain Lejeune had confirmed earlier this year in January that the company will release at least two new smartphones in 2018.  A handset, under the codename ‘Athena’ had appeared on a Chinese certification site named TENAA last month. If TENAA listings are to be believed, it revealed details of the phone including its specifications. The image of the smartphone that appeared on TENAA is as below:

The listing by TENAA showcased a dual rear camera setup on a Blackberry handset bearing model number BBF100-4. A few leaked images of the smartphone that made the rounds zoomed in to show a closer look of its design and highlighted the differences between the KEY2 and its predecessor, the KEYone. If the leaked images are anything to go by, the KEY2 will have a completely rubberised and textured panel in the rear, as compared to KEYone that did not have textured design above the rear camera setup.

The QWERTY keyboard of the KEY2 may also support gestures and it is likely to feature a multitouch-supported display. The display will be a 4.5-inch 1620:1080 display and will boast of an aspect ratio of 3:2. The smartphone might have a 3.5mm audio jack on the top and it might feature a USB Type-C port at the bottom. The TENAA listing also revealed that the handset will support 4G LTE and will have dual-SIM slots. However, contrary reports also suggest that the KEY2 will have a plastic body and the key on its QWERTY keyboard will come with a Matte finish. The handset is widely believed to feature Snapdragon 669 SoC, coupled with 6GB of RAM. It is expected to be powered by the operating system Android Oreo.
