The budget smartphone is successor to company’s extremely popular Zenfone Max Pro M1. Asus managed to sell over 1 million units of the Max Pro M1 in the country within six months of its launch. We expect a similar performance by its successor Max Pro M2, but it is going to face stiff competition from the other budget smartphone in the market, especially from the Realme U1 that was launched last month in India i.e. on November 28. Today, we’ll compare the two phones based on several software and hardware parameters to find which one is a better value for money option.

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 features a polycarbonate body with a glass-like finish which seems quite durable. It sports a vertically stacked dual camera on the back along with LED flash and centrally placed fingerprint sensor. The display is 6.3-inch full-HD+ (1080×2280 pixels) with a 19:9 aspect ratio. It comes with an iPhone X like wide notch at the top and features Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6 protection on top.

The Realme U1 is looks quite identical to Realme 2 Pro but is more compact but not too small either which makes it handy. It has a glass-finish in three different colours of Blue, Black and Gold. The phone has a premium look and feel due to its colour options and dew drop design. The rear of the device features a horizontally stacked dual camera set up and a centrally placed fingerprint sensor. It sports a 6.3-inch full HD+ LCD display with screen resolution of 1080×2340 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. It features 2.5D curved glass and Gorilla Glass 3 layer of protection on top.

In terms of dimensions, the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 measures 157.9 x 75.5 x 8.5 mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs in at 170 grams, while the Realme U1 measures 57.00 x 74.00 x 8.00 and weighs about 168.00 grams. So, the Realme U1 is the slimmest and the lightest of the two phones.

Although it’s difficult to pick a clear winner here, we feel the Realme U1 has slightly upper hand over the Zenfone Max Pro M2 in terms of design and display.

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset coupled with either 3GB or 4GB or 6GB of RAM and a choice of 32GB or 64GB internal storage variants.

The Realme U1 draws power from an octa-core MediaTek Helio P70 SoC clocked up to 2.1GHz paired with ARM G72 GPU. It is world’s first smartphone to be powered by the MediaTek Helio P70 SoC. It comes with 3GB and 4GB RAM options along with 32GB and 64GB inbuilt storage options, which is expandable via microSD card up to 256GB.

Both the phones are neck-to-neck in this department.

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 will run stock Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box and will have just three pre-loaded apps- Facebook, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger. Whereas the Realme U1 runs ColorOS 5.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system.

And the Realme U1 is fueled by a relatively smaller 3,500mAh battery which comes bundled with a 10W charger. It doesn’t support fast charging, so it takes around two and a half hours to fully charge.

So, the Zenfone Max Pro M2 is a clear winner in this department.

The Zenfone Max Pro M2 bears a dual rear camera set up which comprises of a 12-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor for depth sensing. The front bears a 13-megapixel selfie camera which has LED flash support.

The Realme U1 comes with 13MP + 2MP dual rear camera system. The primary sensor gets a f/2.2 aperture while the second sensor gets a f/2.4 aperture. The front hosts an impressive 25MP Sony IMX576 selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture. It features an AI backed Beauty+ mode which is optimised for Indian complexions. The company is also touting a Backlight mode, which keeps both the background and foreground in focus despite bright backlighting behind the subject. The phone also offers a ‘Night Shot Brightness’ for low-light selfies. One can further enhance the brightness in of selfies by turning the AI beautification on.

The camera output is not just about megapixels, but it depends upon several factors. The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 seems to have a slight upper hand over the Realme U1. However, the latter is a clear winner in terms of selfie camera, thanks to its impressive 25MP Sony IMX576 sensor with several features for enhanced selfies.

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 price in India starts at Rs. Rs. 12,999 for the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant. The mid-variant i.e. 4GB RAM + 64GB storage is priced at Rs. 14,999 and the top variant i.e. 6GB RAM + 64GB storage variant is priced at Rs. 16,999.

The Realme U1 is priced in India starting at Rs. 11,999 for the base variant i.e. 3GB RAM + 32GB storage. While its top variant i.e. 4GB RAM + 64GB storage is priced at Rs. 14,999.

If you are a selfie lover, then you should go for Realme U1 and if your requirement is of a phone with good battery backup then the Zenfone Max Pro M2 is the option to consider.
