ASUS ZenFone Max (M1) vs Xiaomi Redmi 6 vs Lenovo K9:We all know that Chinese handset maker Xiaomi dominates the sub-20 and sub-10k price segment as it offers devices loaded with specs at an affordable price. However, the segment is getting saturated day by day with launch of a new phone almost every day. Yesterday, Taiwan based smartphone maker Asus expanded its product portfolio with the launch of ZenFone Max (M1) in India. While, just a couple of days back Lenovo launched its latest K series smartphone dubbed as Lenovo K9. In terms of pricing and specifications, the Lenovo K9 and Asus ZenFone Max will compete against the market leader Xiaomi’s Redmi 6. Let’s us compare the three devices on various software as well as hardware parameters in order to find which one is a good buy and provides a better value for money.

In terms of looks and feel, all three phones are very similar as they all feature a polycarbonate unibody build along with metallic finish. The difference is on the rear, where Redmi 6 and Lenovo K9 sport a horizontally stacked dual camera set up, while the ZenFone Max (M1) sports a vertically stacked dual camera.

In terms of display, the ZenFone Max (M1) sports a 5.45-inch HD+ IPS display with resolution of 720×1440 pixels, aspect ratio of 18:9 and screen-to-body ratio of 82 percent. The Redmi 6 also bears a similar 5.45-inch HD+ display with 720×1440 pixel resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio resulting into an 80.7 percent screen-to-body ratio. While, the Lenovo K9 sports a larger 5.7-inch HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio and 2.5D glass protection.

In terms of dimensions, the ZenFone Max (M1) measures 147.3×70.9×8.7 mm and it weighs in at 150 grams. The Redmi 6 measures 147.5×71.5×8.3 mm and weighs 146 grams. Whereas the Lenovo K9 measures 153.8×72.9×7.95 mm.

So, in terms of design and display, we feel the K9 gets the edge over the other two due to its slim design with larger display.

In terms of software, the Asus ZenFone Max (M1) is shipped with Android Oreo operating system based on ZenUI 5.0. While, the Redmi 6 comes with Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 10 custom UI and the Lenovo K9 runs ZUI 3.9 based on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box

In terms of battery, the ZenFone Max (M1) is backed by 4,000mAh battery with support for fast charging via a 10W adapter. The Redmi 6 is packs a smaller 3,000mAh battery under the hood, with support for 5W charging. While, the Lenovo K9 also packs a similar 3,000mAh battery. So, the Lenovo K9 wins the battle here.

The Asus ZenFone Max (M1) is powered by Snapdragon 430 quad-core processor paired with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded by means of an external microSD card.

The Redmi 6 draws power from an octa-core MediaTek Helio P22 SoC along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of onboard storage. There is an option to expand the storage via a dedicated microSD card up to 256GB.

Under the hood, the Lenovo K9 is powered by a 2.0GHz MediaTek MT6762 octa-core processor coupled with 3GB of RAM. The onboard storage capacity of the device is 32GB which can be extended further up to 128GB using the hybrid microSD card slot.

So, in terms of performance, the Redmi 6 and Lenovo K9 are almost at par with each other.

Let’s now discuss about the camera department, which is one of the crucial factors for consumers while buying a smartphone nowadays

The Asus Zenfone Max (M1) bears a single rear 13-megapixel camera with with f/2.0 aperture, PDAF and LED flash support. For selfies, there’s an 8-megapixel snapper with f/2.2 aperture. The front camera also gets an LED flash support. The other camera features included in the phone are beauty filters, portrait mode, and HDR mode.

Both the Redmi 6 and Lenovo K9 feature a dual camera module on the rear but differ in terms of specs. The Redmi 6 sports a dual camera set up comprising of a 12-megapixel primary sensor + a 5-megapixel secondary sensor coupled with f/2.2 aperture. While, the Lenovo K9 sports a dual camera set up consisting of 13-megapixel primary sensor + 5-megapixel secondary sensor. For selfies and video calls, the Redmi 6 features a 5-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture, 1.12-micron pixels, and certain AI beautification capabilities. While, the Lenovo K9 features a dual front camera setup comprising of a 13-megapixel sensor + 5-megapixel sensor. The front camera set up of Lenovo K9 also gets LED flash support.

ASUS ZenFone Max (M1) vs Xiaomi Redmi 6 vs Lenovo K9: Price and Availability in India

The Asus ZenFone Max (M1) is priced in India at Rs. 8999 but will be sold at an introductory price of Rs. 7499 for a limited time. There will be two color options available for the users- Gold and Black.

The Redmi 6 comes in two variants. The base model i.e. 3GB RAM + 32GB storage is priced at Rs. 7999, while the 3GB RAM + 64GB storage variant is priced at Rs. 9499.

The Lenovo K9 comes with a price tag of Rs. 8999 and will be available in two colour options- Black and Blue.

As expected, the Redmi 6 has a slight price advantage over the other two just like any other Xiaomi device. However, the Lenovo K9 scores higher in terms of specifications. So, if you are a bit flexible with your budget then Lenovo K9 is also a good option to consider.
