ASUS ZENFONE 3S MAX TAKES ON XIAOMI REDMI NOTE 4 IN A BATTLE OF BUDGET SMARTPHONESby Rajshree Faria February 8, 2017
Another player has entered the market of budget Smartphones to try and upend the reigning champion. The new player is Asus Zenfone 3S Max and the champion is none other than Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 4, launched some time back. Let’s have a quick compare and contrast to see if the new handset-on-the-block has what it takes to become the new budget buyers’ favourite…
DISPLAY AND BODY
Let’s begin with first impressions- the looks. Asus’ product sports a 5.2” IPS display with a screen resolution of 1280 x 720p. It boasts of an elegant metal unibody design. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 comes with a slightly bigger 5.5” screen but with a much better 1080 x 1920p resolution.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 fares better than the Asus Zenfone 3S Max here.
Xiaomi has incorporated a 13MP primary and 5MP secondary camera in its Redmi Note 4. High definition video recording along with the usual features like HDR, panorama, autofocus finds a spot in the camera. Also, the camera has a CMOS sensor with backside illumination which means you get better pictures even in low-light conditions. The Asus phone comes with a 13MP primary and an 8MP secondary camera.
Again, Xiaomi wins the round.
All those Android aficionados will love this- the Asus Zenfone 3S Max runs an Android Nougat, the latest and sweetest of all Android iterations. All the goodness of Nougat can be experienced right out-of-the-box without waiting for any OTA updates. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 runs an older Android Marshmallow OS which can be a disappointment which even the MIUI8 can’t help resolve.
Let’s give one point to the Asus Zenfone 3S Max, shall we?
PROCESSOR & MEMORY
This is where the multitasking capabilities of the Smartphone come from. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 64-bit processor which clocks a speed of up to 2GHz and comes in three variants- 2GB, 3GB or 4GB of RAM. On the other hand, we have the Asus Zenfone 3S Max which incorporates a MediaTek 6750 chipset that clocks a speed of 1.5GHz which is less as compared to its Xiaomi competitor. Both the smartphones come with 32GB of internal storage. It’s the external storage capacity where Asus proves who’s the boss- user gets a humungous 2TB of expandable external storage compared to a measly 128GB on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4.
This is where the potential buyer needs to decide- more storage space or faster processor.
BATTERY & CONNECTIVITY
Both our players have been promoted as smartphones that will allow you to forget your charger and power bank at home. The Asus Zenfone 3S Max uses a 5,000mAh battery while the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 incorporates a massive, but not enough to compete with Asus, 4100 mAh battery. Both the phones support 4G dual-SIM.
If a high-powered battery is what you are looking for, then the Asus Zenfone 3S Max should be your phone of choice.
