According to latest research data released by IDC (International Data Corporation) Apple watch is slowly and steadily got ahead of its counterparts in the wearable market. Apple has moved past its close rivals Xiaomi and Fitbit to grab the top spot for both the 4th quarter 2017 and full year 2017. This is primarily due to the success of Apple Watch Series 3 introduced by the company past September with built-in cellular connectivity eliminating the need of continuously teethering the device to an iPhone.

Although Apple does not reveal the actual sales information of Apple Watch (it groups Apple Watch in ‘Others’ category along with Apple iPod, Apple TV etc.), company’s CEO Tim Cook did boast about the Apple Watch Series 3 sales in recent earnings report and mentioned that its sales were more than twice the sales of Apple Watch Series 2 last year. Thus, it’s not much of a surprise that the Apple Watch has dominated the wearables market in 2017. As per IDC report, the Apple Watch worldwide shipments figure touched 8 million mark during last quarter of 2017 making it the best seller during that period.

Based on the IDC report, the top 5 Wearable companies in 2017 are- Apple, Fitbit, Xiaomi, Garmin and Fossil. Apple tops the chart with 17.7 million units sold. Talking about Apple’s close rivals- Xiaomi sold about 15.7 million units in 2017 whereas Fitbit followed closely with about 15.4 million units during the same period. In terms of market share- Apple captured 15.3% followed by Xiaomi (13.6%) and Fitbit (13.3%).

Commenting on the report, Jitesh Ubrani who is senior research analyst at IDC said, “Consumer preferences have shifted to more sophisticated devices and towards well recognized brands, like the Apple Watch”. “It’s due to this that the wearables market has seen healthy double-digit growth in average selling prices since 2016.”, he added further.
