It took Steve Job’s visionary zeal to offer a product which is a fusion of a personal computer as well as the portability of PDA. In 2003, he had envisioned emergence of the cell phone as a handy data bank of vital information apart from being communication device. The entire journey of transition from the then existing Apple’s Newton MessagePad witnessed the success of the iPod and iTunes and finally ended with the launch of the iPhone in 2007, June 29th to be precise.
iPhone’s First Launch
iPhone was first launched in the United States offering quad band GSM cellular connectivity with GPRS and EDGE support for data transfer. It had an in built memory of 128MB while storage memory options of either 4 GB or 8GB or 16GB were offered across the models. For display, the phone was equipped with 3.5 inch touchscreen with multi touch operation 320×480 pixel resolution. The iPhone sported a rear camera of 2 mega pixels with geo-tagging. iPhone was powered with an in built rechargeable Li-ion battery with 3.V 1400 mAh. Apple was successful in selling nearly 6.1 million units of iPhone.
iPhone 3G was announced in June 2008, it was made available in July 2008. Though similar to its predecessor, the iPhone 3G was offered with 3G, GPS and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA. The phone was also running the just launched, iPhone OS2.0 as its operating system with push email and turn by turn navigation along with the App Store through which iPhone users could access and buy third party applications. Keeping the other specifications same, the iPhone 3G was offered in 8 GB or 16GB while the battery used was 1150 mAh, rechargeable Li-ion type. The other data inputs, display and sound specifications remained constant. This one was indeed immensely successful as almost 1 million units were sold in the first weekend itself.
Mid 2009 witnessed the launched of iPhone 3GS promising faster processing and relatively less pricing than its earlier models. It operated on iOS 3.0. Apart from performance, other improvements included 3 mega pixel camera with video recording and voice control feature. It was first released in the US, Canada along with six other European countries followed by its launch in Australia and Japan a few days later with its formal release across the world in August 2009.
The next generation phone from Apple, viz iPhone 4 was released on June 24, 2010. It created much waves amongst Apple users with its offering of FaceTime Video Chat, high resolution Retina Screen which improvised the on-screen display quality. Supposed to be the thinnest smartphone in 2010, its stainless steel frame doubled up as the antenna while the internal components of the phone lay in between the alumina-silicate glass frame. iPhone 4 was manufactured by LG offering an LED backlit TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen of 3.5 inches with a 960×640 display. Its Retina Display feature offers the best possible display quality as perceived by the human eye. Offering juice to the phone is the 3.7 V, 5.3 Wh 1420 mAh battery. The Apple iPhone 4 was available in 8GB, 16GB or 32GB flash memory variants.
Apple introduced the all time powerful iOS 7 with a great multi-functionality feature along with the addition of front facing camera. With so much hype generated around it, orders for nearly 600,000 phones were booked within the first 24 hours of its release. In fact, 4 was its premium model of nearly 15 months and was available for almost 4 years.
Moving ahead to the iPHone 4s which was made available in October 2011, the handset was made even more powerful with new dual core processor (also used in iPad2). Almost 4 million units of Apple phone 4s were sold within the first 3 days of its availability. This phone contained an upgrade to A5 chipset along with 8 MP camera offering 1080p video recording. The iPhone 4s was loaded with iOS 5 with features such as iCloud, iMessage, reminders, Twitter integration along with a notification center. iPhone 4S made waves as it was loaded with a personal assistant app called Siri for the first time ever as an iPhone 4s exclusive. The next 4S models were loaded with iOS8.1 released in October 2014.
The phone was powered with 5.3Whr battery. It was available in 8GB variant before it was discontinued with the announcement of the iPhone 6.
Released in September 2013, iPhone 5 promised to be a slimmer, faster and better performing phone with a 4 inch screen sized diagonally. Also, it was much lighter and slimmer as compared to earlier models of Apple iPhones. The phone was equipped with A6 system on chip with LTE support and offered the 8MP camera from Sony. This phone, too met with a tremendous pre release response of nearly 2 million units. Faced with a few technical glitches, iPhone 5 was soon discontinued to make way for iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C
Both iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were released in September 2013, with IPhone 5S available in black, white and gold variant and 5c model was for the budget buyers with storage on both the phones being same. Also, the body of iPhone 5c is made of polycarbonate casing as against the original offering of aluminum body. Apple’s 5c phone comes loaded with Siri and knowledge navigator and is integrated with Twitter, Wikipedia, Bing and photos.On the other hand, the iPhone 5s is the pricier version of the iPhone 5 offered with a similar look and feel but with Touch ID security feature for accessing the phone and also the App store as well as iTunes. Equipped with a better camera and an A7 dual core processor, the phone comes loaded with the latest iOS7 with better user interface. All the iPhone 5 variants were discontinued with the launch of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models.
iPhone 6 and 6 Plus
The latest iPhone series to be announced viz. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are far more superior than their predecessors with reference to design, processors, cameras, enhanced connectivity and even mobile payments. With displays of 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches along Retina HD display, these phones promise a premier quality image. Fitted with the Apple A8 system-on-chip, and an M8 motion co-processor, both iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus are a definite upgrade and capable of measuring altitudinal changes through the barometer. Also, both these handsets are far slimmer and thinner as compared to iPhone 5 variants.
Once again, there has been an unprecedented demand for both iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus with nearly 4 million pre orders registered while a whopping 10 million handsets of this series have been sold in the first 3 days of its launch.
The journey of Apple iPhone has had its share of upheavals like any other popular product but nevertheless the brand has been improvising and working hard towards fulfilling customer aspirations along with fierce competitive onslaught it has been facing with from smartphone ranges offered by Samsung, HTC, Nokia and many other well established players.
