With newer and newer entertainment mediums coming our way, it’s a mystery how the conventional TV is still functioning. First, it had to deal with all those torrents that crept into the entertainment radar of all avid film and TV series watchers, and then subscription-video on-demand hit the Indian market in the form of Netflix a few months ago. Just when Netflix was gaining ground and Kevin Spacey was regaling the Indian audiences with his brilliant acting in the Netflix exclusive, House of Cards, another American based giant, Amazon, decided to expand its business. The result? The Indian masses now have access to two brilliant SVOD services- Netflix & Amazon Video Prime.
Unless you have a never-ending flow of money along with the patience to switch from one service to another constantly, here is a brief comparison of Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, so that you can choose the one that is better…
Money Matters: Subscription Charges
Netflix has Narcos and people would love to pay for it. Netflix offers three plans: Basic, Standard, and Premium. The most inexpensive plan is tagged at Rs.500 per month while the costliest one is Rs.800. Depending on your plan, you get access to Netflix on 1-4 screens at the same time. The quality of video i.e. standard, HD, or Ultra HD depends on the plan too. Furthermore, once you sign up, you have one month of free access to Netflix.
So, in the most basic plan, you have access to some very appealing shows like Orange Is The New Black, Daredevil, Little White Lie, etc. for just Rs.500. Let’s see what Amazon Prime Video has…
If you grab the introductory offer by Amazon, you can get the Amazon Prime membership for Rs.499. Sounds the same as what is offered by Netflix, right? NO! Amazon Prime Video’s membership extends for a year, instead of just a month! This translates to a meagre ₹42 per month!
For now, shall we concede Round #1 to Amazon Prime Video?
When it comes to the kind of content that will be available on both the platforms, there appears to be no real competition. While Netflix has some Netflix Originals in the making, including 10 films and a series based on Vikram Chandra’s Sacred Games; Amazon Prime Video too has its own set of Amazon Originals like the highly- acclaimed Transparent, The Man in the High Castle, etc. on offer for its subscribers.
Blockbuster films, popular TV shows, regional films, etc. are all set to find themselves a place in the video directory of both, Amazon Prime Video & Netflix.
Both the SVOD platforms seem to tie on this front for now at least.
Additional Subscription Features
While Netflix is exactly what it sounds like, a place where you can watch flicks and shows, Amazon Prime Video is not just about the media.
A subscription of Amazon’s service gets you additional benefits like 1-2 days guaranteed delivery, and earlier access to its Lightning Deals. Who doesn’t like multiple services for the price of one? We do for sure, and that’s why Amazon Prime Video wins this round too.
For now, the battle seems to have been won by Amazon, courtesy of its introductory offer, additional services, and promising directory. However, after a year, the tables may turn and Netflix may just be able to stand out as the relatively inexpensive option. Until then, Amazon in its blue corner, stands as the winner.
