Amazon adds to the excitement of its AI-powered virtual assistant Echo with the launch of Amazon Echo Spot. The new Echo Spot will compete with the Google Home products and will have a circular video display to complement the voice of Alexa and show online information. The device has been launched at a price tag of Rs. 12,999 and is available on Amazon website and app as well as at Amazon kiosks in Bengaluru and Mumbai. It will also be available across 350 point of sale retail outlets across 20 cities in India. It is available in black and white colour at an introductory offer of Rs. 10,499 through Amazon as well as select retail outlets such as Croma, Reliance Digital and Vijay Sales. There is an additional 10 percent discount that Amazon is offering on Echo Spot and other devices in the Echo family through its tie-up with ICICI Bank.

The Echo Spot features a 2.5-inch circular video display and hence is a welcome advancement over Echo Dot, Echo Plus and Eco. The circular video display enables users to watch video news or play movie trailers. It can also display the questions that are asked to Alexa and answers offered by it.

A special incentive for Amazon Prime members is to use the display to view specifications of the product such as image, name, price, user ratings etc. before they place an order through the Amazon website or mobile app. The Echo spot also feature a front facing camera sensor that enables Alexa-to-Alexa voice-controlled video calls. The Echo Spot also enables users to use the camera to send video messages. Video calls and messages work between two Echo Spot devices and on Android and iOS devices using the Alexa companion app.

An exciting feature of the Amazon Echo Spot is the “drop-in” feature. It can recreate the experience of having a close friend or family member making a surprise visit.

The Echo Spot is powered by the second-generation far-field technology that leverages four microphones. The Echo Spot possesses acoustic beam-forming technology and enhanced noise cancellation support. In terms of connectivity, it is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and a 3.5mm Aux-in port that enables users to convert the Echo Spot into a home entertainment system. The Echo Spot enables users to play or view the songs that they select as per their favourite genre, artist, composer, language, time of release of the song etc. A multi-room feature enables users to synchronize music across multiple Echo devices that could be placed in different rooms of the same house.

If the user is not actively using the Echo Spot, it can be used as a nightstand to view the time and date, view calendar and appointments, set alarms and turn off the electrical devices such as lights in the room. The device has a 1.4-inch driver and measures 104x96x91mm.

“Echo Spot combines the popular design of the Echo Dot with the added benefit of a display,” said Jayshree Gururaj, Director – Amazon Devices. “With the screen, Alexa adds an enriching visual experience to voice activation and control. We are excited to bring Echo Spot to our customers in India.”
